Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've tried searching but no luck. My frien has bought a new iPhone in the UK this week and she wants to unlock it.

I know nothing about the phone except that its a iPhone 3G 16Gb.

Is this phone likely to be unlockable through yellowsn0w?

If not, is there another way to use it with swedish carriers?

first you need to know the firmware...02.28.00 is unlockable via yellowsn0w.
But if your friend has 02.30.00 then she will have to wait for the dev-team.Unless she is willing to use a turbo sim I've not heard that many good reports about these but you never know

Yellowsn0w only works with 02.28.00 baseband & that comes with the 2.2 firmware.

First thing to do is tell your friend not to update with iTunes if prompted, then look in the setting/general/about for your modem firmware version.

If you see anything other then 02.28.00 you cant unlock it yet

You are fresh out of luck. OTB UK iPhones will almost certainly be latest versions.

Anyway - buying an iPhone so close to a new model release....a wise decision ??

Not quite true, it is possible that it has an earlier FW in which case it can be updated to 2.20 and unlocked.

You would be surprised, certainly a couple of weeks ago there were still reports of people buying phones with 2.20, it's getting less likely but some shops still have old stock.

@KiWo - have you checked the FW version?

The last 4 phones I jail broken for friends have all been 02.30 OTB

but you're right Im assuming it will be on a newer version then 02.28
