Discuss Question on T-Zones and Edge at the Yellowsn0w (3G unlock) - Hackint0sh.org; update

I was able to jailbreak my 3G by changing to a different macintosh, then quickpwn 2.2 worked fine.
I then unlocked using yellowsn0w, so I can use either my ATT or Tmobile sim in my 3G, if i turn off 3G when using Tmobile. I also have to enter epc.tmobile.com in network edge settings, then edge works too on Tmobile.
the speed tests show that the 3G iphone is almost twice as fast as my 2G iphone, regardless whether I use ATT or Tmobile sim in either phone..
to me that means my FW 1.1.4 on my 2G iPhone is slower than FW 2.2 on my 3G iPhone..
guess I might update my 2G iPhone to FW 2.2 and see if it gets faster than with current FW 1.1.4
thanks to everyone on this site for all your help
and Applause for Dev Team!

I dont think you even needed to do all these test to come to the conclusion that ATT is faster. The 3G is useless on Tmo! You can only use Edge.

better phone reception
costs $40 more per month than Tmobile
internet for 5.99
poor phone reception
1. port the tmobile number over, and start paying 100 a month to ATT, or
2. pay 175 more for the 3G phone, cancel ATT and stay with Tmobile at 60 a month?
btw, i notice significant speed difference between the FW 1.1.4 2G iphone on Wifi, compared to the 3g on wifi with FW 2.2
Im wondering if the speed difference is FirmWare related, or did the 3G iphone incorporate other hardware based speed enhancements..
iow, if the 2g iphone was running FW 2.2, what kind of speed would it get on wifi, similar to the 3G on wifi? anyone care to do a speed test and report what youre getting on a 2g with FW 2.2 using iphonespeedtest.com to test wifi speed please?
Whatever you do don't call t-mobile on you iphone. I just called them to see what data plan I could get and was quoted around $30. I asked if there was anything cheaper and I was told "not with the iphone you are using". I asked her how she knew I had an iphone and she said "your sim card is telling me, isn't technology great?".
You may already know this, but I didn't.
you can do all the add a data plan yourself online at my.tmobile.com
there you can tell the computer you are using a telephone called the TMOBILE DASH
you are correct that Tmobile knows you are using an iPhone when you call them, they dont care, they just like scaring the shit out of us..
there is nothing wrong with using an iPhone on Tmobile, and you can buy any data plan you want to use with it, just do it online
btw, I decided to cancel ATT because it saves me 40 a month, and because I had no 3G in New Mexico anyway, where I currently spend half my time.. in NM my Tmoble edge speed is up to 300 kbps, which is quite good..
still loving the blue gps dot on the maps!
Which plan are you using and mainly what app did you run to get it working on your iphone?
I am not scared of them. I have been with them for 12 years and have had good success with customer service.

I am on the 5.99 T-Mobile Web plan
It seems the 5.99 plan is no longer offered, but there is a 9.99 plan called HotSpot, which I think, but you should confirm, will give my "Tmobile Dash phone" the ability to access the internet (with wifi, but also thru Edge afaik), PLUS gives free access to wifi at Starbucks, which the 5.99 plan does not..
1. I turned off 3G
2. I turned on Data Roaming
3. I entered epc.tmobile.com into the Cellular Data Network (edge) settings
there is currently no application that does the entries automatically
On my current phone they have a 9.99 100mb internet plan. This might work for me, but I wonder what they charge if I go over?
T-Mobile Web 5.99 plan users. KEEP YOUR PLANS.
T-Mobile Web 5.99 plan users. KEEP YOUR PLANS!!
New 9.99 HotSpot is for "HotSpots" only.
1. I saw new 9.99 HotSpot plan (thought it was edge+hotspot)
2. Cancelled 5.99, added 9.99 hotspot
3. Now Edge doesn't work (tried ALL apns)
4. Figured out HotSpot doesn't include edge. (im freakin dumb)
5. Now I cancelled Hotspot.
6. Trying to get back to 5.99 plan but can't find 5.99 online anymore.
7. Now I am on 24.99 G1 plan (unlimited edge+400 txt msgs)... w/ APN: internet2.voicestream.com
8. Paying 15 dollars more, seems 3x faster (140kbits YMMV) than 5.99 (40kbits YMMV), BUT! still its expensive.
Hope noone else would make the same mistake.
