Haven't upgraded the FW yet but it is working perfectly in 2.2
Just upgraded on UK Vodafone (SIM card has all the crap on it like lottery, weather etc etc) - all working and tested on 3G, 2G but not wireless yet
1) Installed update via Cydia
2) Exit cydia back to Home
3) Reset Network Settings - phone rebooted
4) Smiled when I saw Voda carrier
Now we just need to know what its 'fixed'
From the Dev Team blog:
"0.9.7 yellowsn0w improves compatibility with with 2.2.1 system software. You need version 0.9.7 when you create an ipsw with PwnageTool and upgrade using that ipsw."
So the new version is for the 2.2.1 FW
Just be careful and read carefully before doing anything
GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband
This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2.1 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will ensure that you can still use “yellowsn0w” the iPhone 3G unlock application. To upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.1
There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

I updated 2.2.1 on my 3g and installed yellowsn0w .97, but still says INVALID SIM CARD. Even though, i did reset network, reboot, hard reboot, and airplane mode ON/OFF.
P.S. it works on 2.2 and yellowsn0w .97.

Did you use pwnagetool (i.e. not update baseband)?
If you updated the baseband too, then Yellowsn0w doesn't worksQuote:

Sorry mate, the basic answer is there is nothing you can do - you will have to wait and see if the Dev Team can exploit that baseband to run the yellowsn0w code
