Not sure if this has been discussed, my search didn't return anything relevant...
So i have a 16GB 3G iPhone with AT&T here in US (New York).
Its currently running FW 2.2 with the 02.28 baseband and i've Jailbroken it and installed yellowsn0w. Not that i really need it or anything, since i AM using AT&T, it was more of an academic exercise. To see if i can do it, i guess.
So i did it and everything is working great.
Now, lately i was trying to run Super Monkey Ball but it kept crashing and i thought that maybe i'm running too much stuff and there's not enough memory. So i started unloading stuff that i'm not actively using: vsftpd, syslog writing to /var/log/ and such.
After a while i installed the yellowsn0w toggle for bossprefs and decided to turn it off (temporarily). When i bounced the phone - i got no bars and my phone number stopped showing up in iTunes. Weird, i thought, and enabled yellowsn0w again and bounced the phone. Everything back to normal when it came back up.
So my question is: is this a normal behavior for a Jailbroken phone? I did use some sort of a custom ipsw file (i think) when jailbreaking it. Does this behavior go away when using normal firmware?
Anyone else seen this behavior and can enlighten me?

I have a UK o2 Pay & go
If I pop their sim in I get a carier signal here in India on roaming.
If I pop out their sim and pop in my Indian Sim. I get the no bars.

This is on a bone stock phone no jail break no yellow snow.
It would seem this is noral behaviour.

If you now go to settings and cycle aeroplane mode it will come back with an invalid sim msg.

When you turn off yellow snow all your doing is reverting the phone to stock status as far as the unlock is concerned.

Well...the thing is - i'm on AT&T and i'm using a real AT&T 3G SIM card. So it is supposed to work without yellowsn0w.
I've tried power-cycling and airplane mode-cycling many times and nothing seems to work.
I've also tried removing the SIM and re-inserting it right away.
Nothing seems to work.
Almost as if the phone won't work without yellowsn0w...
I've not tried any other SIMs because i just don't have any other ones...

When i was testing my phone to see if my 3G just didnt work I used an offical AT&T 3G sim card and it wouldnt work unless I had yellowsn0w turned on.

I dont know why though.

Did you use a custom firmware? If so make sure that the activate box was NOT checked. because if you are a legit user you do not need the activation... which will give you invalid sim.. so re-jailbreak but this time with out activation.. hookup to itunes and have a the legit activation done and you should be good to go....
