hmm ok, i think we need a new thread where every 3g owner can post their last number of the sn (or the first, i'm not sure) which represense the week of production and the firmware versions like we've done with the 2g to get infos about the installed baseband version, right?

cause on the bay there are many new in a box iphones, where nobody knows which firmware is installed....

what do you think about it?

I think folks who have had a 3G iPhone since last June, July, and maybe August, should be OK.

OTOH, I think anyone buying a 3G iPhone today will NOT be able to unlock it with the current release of Yellowsn0w.

And I think the Yellowsn0w name is a bit disrespectful, it pisses on Apple, and turns it yellow like a pineapple.

I propose the name Chairlift for the next unlock, IF it works with ALL 3G iPhones.

I just bought two refubs from at&t.
They had a deal going on, so I bought the S.O. an 8GB for $99, and myself a 16GB for $199.

Of course two year contract required, but I plan on breaking mine on the 30th day and paying the ETF.

Both refurbs came in today, the 8GB had 2.1 on it with baseband 02.11.07

and the 16GB had 2.02 on there, with baseband 02.08.01

so it looks like i'm safe!
oh and the 90 day warranty they promise on refurbs, apparantly thats the minimum they guarantee, so it may be more based upon when it was originaly purchased.
The 8GB expires in Oct 09', and the 16GB expires August 09'.

    congratulations
so, what will your total cost be when you pay the etf?.. and whats the pro and cons of cancelling in 3 days instead.. make a difference?

and thanks, your experience implies that any iphone shipped up until October 08, still had FW 2.1, and can be unlocked with Yellowsn0w.. also implies refurbs are likely to be a good way to get a Yellowsn0w capable iPhone 3G..

I just got off the phone to ATT and spoke to 3 different people.

2 of them said the activation fee is not waived even if cancelled within 3 days, but, 1 of them, in the special iPhone department, told me that yes, the rule is that there is no activation fee if returned within 3 days.

He also said that if I choose to keep the phone, there is NO ETF.

example, buy a brand new iPhone for 199, cancel in 3 days, cost is 199 plus any airtime used, nothing else!!!!

or, buy a refurb for 199 with a $100 rebate, cancel in 3 days, and keep the phone after paying the rebate back.. total cost for a refurb, 199 plus airtime.

so, the cost of a refurb and a non refurb is the same, difference being a refurb will be unlockable with Yellowsn0w, the new iPhone will not be unlockable (yet)

I think that is accurate to the best of my knowledge

This same rep said that if I cancel after 30 days THEN there is a $175 contract termination fee... regardless if I keep the phone or not. If I return the phone, there is a 10% restocking fee on new phones, no restocking fee on refurb phones..

best way to get an unlocked 3G, buy a refurb, and cancel in 3 days, total cost 199 plus airtime

sorry but that is wrong. if you RETURN the phone you will not have an ETF, not if you keep it. trust me on this, i have experience with purchasing many iphones and going through their system
