this unlock is important for people who need to replace broken 2G phones.

In the past, people would post what to look for on the bar code to tell which baseband was in what box.

I hope people post that information now. Because some apple stores do NOT turn over phone like popular ones.

However, I get the feeling that this might not applicable here if the baseband was shipped long ago...

    Default T-mobile G3 Frequency

Will the iPhone 3G work on t-mobiles 2G network which is the equivalent to AT&T 3G network?

Some one told me that t-mobiles 2G network runs on 1700 megahertz ans AT&T runs there 3G network on 1900 megahertz.

    Can someone confirm this.

If this is the case I'll stick with my 2G iPhone.
    Now the iPhone 4
    The ulitmate iPhone...... :-)

    > t-mobiles 2G network which is the equivalent to AT&T 3G network?

no, 2G is not equivalent to 3G
yes you will get 2G internet speed, from an unlocked iPhone on Tmobile USA, its called EDGE.. not 3G

IF you get a 3G iPhone with FW 2.1 and unlock it with yellowsn0w to use the phone with Tmobile in USA, you will NOT GET 3G internet speeds, you will get EDGE data speeds. Tmobile USA is NOT compatible with the 3G capability of the iPhone, because Tmobile uses the WRONG frequency.. this is what the first two posts on page 3 are talking about.

    > my 3g has firmware 2.2 updated via iTunes. this soft-unlock won't work on mine will it ?

Correct, yellowsn0w will NOT unlock an iPhone 3G with FW 2.2.

As far as I can tell, only 3G iPhones with FW 2.1 can be unlocked.

Bottom line, IF you get a 3G iPhone and unlock it to use Tmobile USA you will NOT GET 3G. Tmobile USA is NOT COMPATIBLE with 3G

otoh, wifi WILL work on a 3G iPhone unlocked to Tmobile USA, so will EDGE

The software unlock does, however, require that the user has a jailbroken iPhone 3G running a Baseband version equal to or lower than 2.11.07
Hold on so if we've already updated to 2.2 by accident then theres no way this is gonna work for us.
Coz if not then thats £350 gone down the toilet.

Yellowsn0w is not firmware dependent but rather baseband dependent. If you updated to 2.2 using iTunes and not a custom firmware made with PwnageTools which disables the baseband update, then you're out of luck because Apple included a baseband update in it's 2.2 firmware and there were several threads warning people not to update and rather download the firmware and use Pwnage Tools to customize and disable the baseband update and then restore the custom firmware via iTunes.

If your baseband is lower than or equal to 2.11.07 then you're all set and can use the yellowsn0w software unlock. However if you're baseband is higher "2.28.00", you can't use yellowsn0w and will have to wait for the Dev Team to figure out a way to downgrade the baseband.

To check your firmware\baseband version go to Settings > General > About.

Hopefully dev team can find a fix even if it does take them a while xD
