    > The software unlock does, however, require that the user has a jailbroken iPhone 3G running a Baseband version equal to or lower than 2.11.07.

    what does that mean?
If I go buy a new iPhone for Xmas, what baseband will it have?

    > Baseband versions higher are currently not supported.

how do you know what baseband you are getting if you buy the phone now?

    thanks

the dev-team unlock for 3G phones is due out after new year. but it will not work on new iPhones!

that will let an OLD 3G iPhone work on Tmobile in USA..

Advantage of Tmobile, is that data costs $30 on ATT, and only $6-10 on Tmobile. Also, Tmo gives you 400 text messages for $10, contrast with ATT, who give you 1500 for $15

Advantage of ATT is visual voicemail, and 3G internet, in selected markets..

cost of ATT with 900 rollover and 1500 text, plus data = $105 before taxes

cost of Tmobile with 1000 minutes, 400 text, plus data = $66

cost advantage to Tmo, $39 a month savings over ATT

now the real problem, for me, is reception. Tmobile has no reception at my home in Santa Cruz California, ATT has no reception at my home in Santa Fe New Mexico

Now tell me this, how do you get a 3G iPhone in USA without a contract from ATT?

imho, if you want to be on Tmobile, you need to stay on the 2G iPhone

explain it to me if Im mistaken please
    Jon

    @jon_slider,
The DevTeam unlock works on iphone 3G with baseband 2.11.07 or lower.
Newer phone may not have that BB OTB but that does not mean no unlock.
It's the cat & mouse game. I'm sure Dev Team will figure it out and possibly they will be able to downgrade the BB.
True, the 2G is still golden.

5.99 tzone plus 4.99(400 text message) is better than paying $45 a month with att.
yes, the 3g is faster, but the battery life is just too shitty on the 3g iphone.

one way to get a us 3g iphone is from att, get the iphone, 8 gb or 16gb, canceling it without 3 days to avoid the activation fee. pay for the early termination fee of 175 per phone. you got your 3iphone. dont go to the apple store, they will ask you to return the phone.

with all due respect, I am as excited about iPhone as most people, but am having trouble figuring out whats so good about unlocking a 3G iPhone if it is in USA, and only Tmobile will work, other than ATT..

    help me understand

    > The DevTeam unlock works on iphone 3G with baseband 2.11.07 or lower.

yes, but what does that mean in practical terms.. is this an unlock for folks who bought iPhones last June only? What about July, August, September, October, November, and December buyers?

what was the last production date for an OTB iPhone G3 with baseband 2.11.07 or lower? When the unlock comes out in January, if I go buy an iPhone in January, the unlock wont work, due to higher baseband number?

Sure they will figure out how to downgrade baseband someday, like they figured out the G3 unlock in 6 months, but, what if I dont want a downgraded baseband on my brand new 3G iPhone?

whats the benefit of unlocking a 3G iPhone in USA, since Tmobile is the only alternative, and does not support 3G.

afaict, the only benefit to the 3G iPhone is the cool blue dot showing GPS location on the maps.. and the right to buy software from apple.. and I do think the clinometer is cool..

but seriously, if you want to have 3G speed, in the USA you cannot have it with an unlocked carrier, only with ATT, afaik

I was amazed at the number of people who bought G3 iPhones last June, hoping an unlock was just around the corner.. and now people are getting excited again, about an unlock that only works on older baseband iPhones

so back to my original question, what does it mean? When did you have to buy an iPhone to have a baseband lower than 2.11.07? or could I buy one today?:-).. I honestly dont know the answer..

on the g2 iPhones, I knew week 44 was a cutoff for using AnySim, and that was a number I could read on the serial number.

Is there a serial number on G3 iPhones that is a cutoff date for baseband 2.11.07?
