In case it is of any interest, I got a 3G refurb from an Apple Store about a month ago (my original quit working). It came preinstalled with the 2.2.1 firmware and 2.30.03 baseband, but had the 5.8 BL so the Fuzzyband downgrade worked. The serial is 5K9072...

To check the BL you need to download 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader from Cydia and run it - if the phone is Jailbroken it shouldn't be a problem and if it's 5.8 it will downgrade it. If the phoen isn't jailbroken you can't check the BL
