I had the same problem and nothing would work, I eventually started again with a new ipsw build and enabled the cydia and installer programs, as all I wanted to do originally was unloack a 2.02 2G phone. When I did it this time it worked fine, try it and hopefully it will work out for you.

Did you resize the root partition?. If you don't, set it to 700 Mb and try again.

Error 6 is a fairly common problem... My problem was believing I had put my Iphone in DFU mode while I actually hadnīt...
In my case after that my Iphone just kept restarting I was never able to put in real DFU mode to restore. So used Ziphone (i know, i know...) to put in DFU mode (the DFU helper is actually usefull) and proceeded with the Pwning process just fine...no need to downgrade, reinstall or partition resizing...
Also make sure your Itunes is actually Pwned before trying to use your custom firmware...

it seems that you cant make a custom ipsw without cydia or installer to work why is that i dont want either of them why do i have to keep em?

How do you know if your iTunes has been "pwned"....?

I'm having the same damn problem!
Since yesterday I am trying to shrink my partition from 2000mb back to 500mb and I can't because of these damn erros 1600, 1601 and now 6
I was on 2.1 all good and then decided to get my 2000mb back since i figured I lost it for nothing by stretching root partition back when 2.0.1 just came out. I downgrade successfully to 2.0.1 and then tried winpwn to load custom 2.0.1 file and that's when the hell began. Sinec last night I can't get this to work!
Can anyone tell me how I can get passed these errors? Is there any other way to resize partition without loading custom fw file?
I did everything correct, downgraded back to iTunes 7.7, went into DFU mode, it started restoring but few sec later kicked back with Error 6!
I appreciate if anyone could help me.
P.S. I can always go back to 2.1 without any problems, but I want to get back the 2000mb that I lost.
