In DFU your screen will be black when itunes recognizes it...

I've tried both DFU mode, and recovery mode. Both give me the same error.

Yes, I'm sure I'm in DFU mode, by the way.

This is not true, it has little to do with how itune sees it.
As I said, everything works fine if i try to load only the factory 1.2.0 ipsw, the custom fle is the only one that fails.

When I put my iphone in DFU status, I couldn't get it out without doing a full restore; also the phone kept "rebooting". Here's the set of events I've had. PC#1- Itunes 7.7. Ran winpwn on a 1.1.4 jailbroke iphone. No dice. Read the guides, including "try another PC" and "remove the sim card" and "try another USB port". No dice. Eventually it was in 1.1.4 and I couldn't get it out of restore mode without restoring unjailbroken 1.1.4. So I upgraded it to 2.0 unjailbroken (and locked). So the 2.0 works on the phone but it's locked so it wont read my sim. Initially I was getting 1604 errors. Now I'm getting (6) errors. I hit the home button when plugging the turned off iphone into the computer and it starts preparing the phone and then I get the (6) error. So I have 2.0, locked, not jailbroke.

Default No luck with winpwn 2.0 either

I tried 2.0.1 RC on winxp.

it even failed to create the ipsw flie.

So I downloaded 2.0.2 RC winpwn, it took time, but did create the custom file.

But when I use Itunes to restore the phone .. it's exactly the same behavior, error code #6 .. so nothing changed.

The file is still not readable by winpwn itself .. i can't believe this behavior .. it creates the file and says it's successfully created, itunes doesn't bitch about the file .. however itunes fails loading it to the phone like before.

what a bummer .. i am tempted to use xpwn, but I don't really dig their explanation about the dfu mode .. they are so specific when and how to take the phone to DFU mode .. but winpwn is cavalier about it.

Again .. even iclarified ate one step in their step by step .. i don't know why these otherwise smart guys do that .. if they miss a step, they should at least fix it== but that would only happen if they ever read their own writings.

There is a difference between DFU and restore mode but that isnt so obvious to people. The link I just posted should help clarify. I followed those steps, put it in DFU mode and presto. 2.0 firmware unlocked and jailbroken.

So to put it bluntly... we think it is in DFU mode but it isn't. At least that was my problem. I'm fairly sure that is the problem everyone else has as well.

We have a sticky thread on Restore and DFU mode:

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45102

Time and time again, I see people mistaken by the two. I hope the above link will help

Default I seem to have bricked my 1 phone

So finally i have done it.

it was being detected as in restore mode, but itune was just spinning it's wheels on "preparing to restore " screen .. i pulled it out ..

now the screen is blank and i get errors 1600/1601/1604, i used to get only Error 6
so i don't know if this is an improvement :-)

i have seen this on both my xp and windows machine .. no difference what soever.

on the positive note .. i did try to unlock another phone .. yes i am taking chances and it told me a few things .. one this winpwn is very finnikey software .. itune sat at 'preparing to restore" for good 5 minutes .. and i didn't remove it .. it finally wen thru .. however not without hitch.

Last message said "baseband upgrade failed' . . but i popped t-mo sim in .. and it worked (modem firmware is 4_05_4G)

Wifi worked .. and so did youtube .. bootneuter wasn't removed .. appstore is nice :-)

but I have a brick on my hands .. any help before sunrise will be nice lol
