You see, that is what im afraid the DFU stuff...
Cause it think this guy got it right, but for some reason, itunes gives you the error. I have red, some posts of people that put the iphone in a correct DFU mode, and still get the error.

That is why im not upgrading yet, until they release something to put the phone automatically in DFU mode, or the process of the custom firmware puts your phone in DFU mode, its all too risky...

Default works perfectly the first time

winpwn 2.0.0.4 works perfectly if you follow bigboss' tutorial to the dot.

i set the custom firmware options with cydia, installer and youtube fix with 551mb partition size and winpwn on vista 32bit created the ipsw without problems.

put the 1st gen 8gb iphone (1.1.4 unlocked with iLiberty) into proper DFU mode (follow bigboss' guide on this too) and shift-restored the custom ipsw without any errors on the first try. bootneuter also ran without problems.

i also got itunes to restore from backup without any errors, so i DIDN'T lose any of my contacts, sms messages, photos, wifi settings, etc. i DID need to re-sync all my songs though but that's expected with a restore. i thoroughly tested my phone after i did the backup restore and my mail app didn't crash and itunes also never asked me to restore from backups/setup as a new phone a 2nd time. i did a burn test which basically consisted of turning on and off the phone several times, connected and disconnected on itunes, restarted computer and connected and disconnected again. tested wifi, locate me and it all works perfectly.

maybe i'm one of the lucky few? or maybe i just did everything correctly =P

you only have that problem with the name not showing if your in a un supported country i also have this problem but in 1.1.4 there was a region patch fix which does not seem to be ready for 2.0.1 afaik...

Im a little afraid, that something goes wrong, specially with the DFU step.
Could you tell me the steps you did, so that i can do the same... any different??

did you leave your phone attached the whole process for example?? did itunes was open or closed in the process for example??

i followed his tutorial to the dot. i didn't do anything differently. i had my phone plugged in the entire time. (itunes opens up automatically when i plug it in)

i kept itunes open when i was building the ipsw but i have enough available memory so i won't crash. you might however want to close it temporarily if you're low on ram. itunes should be open when you do the ipwner step in the tutorial so you can pwn itunes before restoring in DFU mode.

as for dfu mode, you can't use any programs to enter it for you. you MUST enter DFU manually by doing the following:
    1. turn off your phone completely.
    2. first press and hold down the home button, then press and hold your other finger down on the power button. right after you press down on the power button, immediately begin counting to 10.
    3. after 10 seconds, release the power button and keep pressing the home button until you hear your computer detect the phone connected to your usb when the computer beeps. release the home button once you hear this.
    4. screen should be completely black (no itunes cable picture or anything)

if you do that you should be in proper DFU mode and not recovery mode. shift-restore the custom firmware and it should restore without error 6 or 16xx.

keep the iphone plugged in through the usb and itunes open once you put the iphone in dfu mode itunes will pop up saying there is a phone in dfu mode and you need to restore, thats when you press shift and restore, pick the custom fw and thats it, it restores and itunes asks if you want to backup or start from scratch..
