    Default DFU mode

Hi, I am new and have search after a solution but did not find it.
I use Win Vista 32, one Iphone 1st generation unlocked with PWD software. 2 days ago it blocked again and I can't put it in DFU mode.
I tried to restore it with Itunes but got error 6. It is not my 1st Iphone and I have already unlocked a lot but this time I can't help.
I tried everything. I know how to put it in DFU manually but failed.
I used different computers, different usb....but no success.

I should add that the Iphone is on recovery mode so not possible to switch off or do anything else with it. I had the last version 2.0.2

    Could you help please?
    Thanks a lot

Gosh for weeks I have been pulling my hair out - now finally I can have 2.0.2 on my 2G iPhone! Okay so this is what worked for me and I will also mention what I changed from my previous attempt.

My iPhone is an 8GB with 1.1.4 unlocked using iLiberty. I had previously tried to pwn the phone with winpwn 2.0.0.4 and it was unsuccessful even after 30+ attempts.

When I was thinking about why it kept failing and why I kept getting error (6) and errors 1601/1604, I just assumed that I was not getting the phone into DFU mode. But infact I was, the problem was that the custom firmware made by winpwn was the issue. I knew I could not have been doing something that wrong considering so many people have all slightly varied how we get into DFU mode - so really - it can't be that difficult to do.

I noticed a lot of people have 2G iPhones at 1.1.4 and want to jump to 2.x. Most of us were just trying to DFU restore our phones from FW 1.1.4 to 2.x (winpwnd). So with all these failures I thought perhaps it might be better to just upgrade the FW within iTunes to 2.0.2 first. Of course going from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2 meant that I would be locking myself out of the phone completely. So if I did not successfully pwn the phone, my only option would be to downgrade iTunes to 7.5 so that I could put 1.1.4 back on the phone.

I had not heard of anyone upgrading their 1.1.4 phones to 2.x first and then pwning with 2.x so I put the question out there and thankfully volkspost said he actually did that very thing on two of his phones. It just seems more likely that if you have the official 2.x firmware on the phone first and then pwn with a custom 2.x firmware - you will have a better success rate.

So what I did was the following:

    01. Shut down the phone.
    02. Shut down iTunes.
    03. Connect the phone via the USB cable.
    04. Hold Home & Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds.
    05. Release the Sleep/Power button and continue holding Home for another 10 seconds.
    06. Itunes will start and show a message and your PC will beep.
    07. the screen on the phone is black - you are in DFU mode.
    08. Shift + restore and select the OFFICIAL apple 2.0.2 firmware
    09. After many minutes, your phone is successfully updated to FW2.0.2
    10. Phone is now locked with only access to the emergency screen.

    11. Start winpwn 2.5.
    12. Expert: ON.
    13. Yes to everything eg. activate/unlock/youtube activate/bootneuter removal/resize partition/cedia/installer 4. No to custom logo/wipe data.
    14. Set resize partition to 800MB.
    15. Save custom firmware.
    16. DO NOT remove "Custom-" prefix from the front of the firmware file.

    16. The built in DFU mode instructions kick in - follow them.
    17. iTunes will be pwned.
    18. Shift + Restore in iTunes and select the custom firmware.
    19. Enjoy your pwned 2.0.2 phone.

    A few things:
    1. The message in itunes after it starts (step 6) says that it has discovered a phone in Recovery mode - this is the right message. There is no message that says DFU mode instead even when you are in DFU mode.

    2. If your PC does not show the "DFU mode" balloon in the bottom right corner - don't worry, you will still be in DFU mode if you have followed the steps correctly.

    3. Updating your 1.1.4 phone to 2.x officially within iTunes WILL lock the phone. You will only have access to the emergency call screen. The only way to downgrade from this is to re-install iTunes 7.5 and then officially downgrade to FW1.1.4.

    4. I believer that updating first to firmware 2.x officially is the best way to go about all this. I had so many errors - I often got error (6) and 1601/1604. After I had updated - I successfully pwned the phone with the custom 2.0.2 FW over the official 2.0.2 FW.

Thanks to volkspost for all his help on this!
Good to know because im planning to upgrade my. I have same phone and firmware you had. 1.1.4 and i want to go to 2.1 actually i don't know if is possible yet but i wouldn't mind going to 2.0.2 i have a few question before i go ahead.

1-I have a legit att account so activating the phone shouldn't be a problem. But i prefer to have my phone Unlock. Now if i upgrade the firmware using the apple firmware will my phone lose all the info i have? contact, Bookmark etc?

2-how do i create a custom firmware? sorry im kind of noob

3- i have 2 friends who also want me to jailbreak their 3g iphone its there a way i can just create one custom firmware and pawn both phone using the same custom firmware even though i their phone its running on different firmware?

    thanks

Good read. I'm trying out your method as we speak. However, I'm still having problems. Mainly: Why does WinPwn 2.5 Beta crash in the middle of the DFU process? After I go through the sleep/home button mess, the window says the iPhone is going into DFU mode, blah blah blah, and then suddenly the program freezes and a "Winpwn 2.5 BETA has stopped working" window pops up. I've never gotten to the end.

    HOLY EFFING EFF.

I've still got my fingers crossed, but it looks like it's worked! The iPhone is in the middle of the BootNeuter thing, which I'm assuming means it worked.

Okay, so here's what I did that was different from DimSum:

    1) Same process basically up to
    16. Following the DFU built-in instructions. The only difference is that I did allow custom images.

    2) When I got to step 16, and was done pressing and holding those buttons, Winpwn 2.5 froze up (as always). I had a major "Eff this" moment and tried the SHIFT+restore in the iTunes menu and uploaded the "Custom" .ipsw file. I held the home button during the entire process.

    3) Long story short, it worked. At first, I thought it was a dud because I didn't use Winpwn all the way (it was still frozen) and nothing magical or dramatic seemed to happen. iTunes popped up that "Your iPhone has been reset to factory setting" window so that didn't help the situation either. The iPhone had the custom restore image on the screen.

Then, after pressing ok, I decided, whatever, I've been doing this for about 10 hours straight anyway, and packed up to go home. When I removed the USB cable, the custom boot image popped up on the iPhone, followed by the BootNeuter screen and an anticlimactic moment of realization.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet. I'm about to try making a call after this BootNeuter stuff finishes.
