Default [Sharing] - My WinPwn 2.0.0.4 experience with 2.01 firmware

    Hello,
After seeing so many people facing problems with restoring the custom firmware to the iphone, I decided to experiment to see what's going on. I would like to share some of the things I found here with readers.

    Hardware:

    - PC running windows XP Pro + sp3
    - iTunes 7.7 (fresh install)
    - WinPwn 2.0.0.4 (fresh install)
    - Iphone 2G, boot loader 3.9, running firmware 2.0. Previously Pwned using Pwnage Tool 2.0.0.1 on the Mac. Boot loader previously neutered and baseband 04.05.04_G unlocked.

    WinPwn Process:

    - Run winpwn 2.0.0.4
    - Build custom firmware by selecting iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw file
    - Select "cydia", "youtube activation fix", "activation", "no wipe", "partition = 600 MB". Nothing was selected for custom logo, custom payload, nothing for BB update & boot neuter (because my phone BL is already neutered, BB already unlocked and BB version is the same with firmware 2.0.1
    - No error building custom firmware
    - When finish, I click on ipwner and select the custom firmware just built. No error.
    - Now shut down winpwn

At this point, I can say that WinPwn is working. From here, i proceed to put iphone in DFU mode to restore with custom firmware. This is the trickiest part of the whole process and somewhat confusing to many people. Let me describe in detail.

    Restoring process:

    1. Shutdown WinPwn
    2. Connect running iphone to computer
    3. Turn off iphone while it's connected to computer
    4. Shutdown iTunes
    5. Simultaneously hold power + home. Count 1-10, let go of power and continue holding home until you hear the connection tone from the PC. You can let go of home now. The screen on iphone is black. Now you launch iTunes, it should say something like "need to check with server ....." (more on that later).

    Digress:
some people said when they hit power + home, 2 secs later, the apple or pineapple appears .... Well, that is wrong because they did not hit the power + home simulatneously. If you do it right in step 1-5, the screen on iphone should remain black through out the whole DFU process.

Now, iTunes says "need to check server ....blah blah blah". If you click on yes, it will run and eventually time out on you. You can close iTunes. Launch iTunes again, it will say "need to check server ...", this time you click cancel and iTunes should display the phone in recovery mode. I tried this several times and it looks like you have to launch itunes once, close it, launch it again in order for it to display phone in recovery mode.

    6. Hold SHIFT and click restore and select the custom firmware.
This is where many people encounter 16xx error (including me). For me, when I shift-click restore with custom fw; iTunes proceeds to do that, my iphone screen turn WHITE while itunes tries to restore. It remains white then error out with 1601 error.

*** I disconnect the phone, hold power + home and phone reboot and boot back normally to its 2.0 firmware.

I begin with step 1-6 again, and again I encounter 1601 error. I did this several times (step 1-6) but still end up with 1601 error again.

At this point, I thought to myself: "may because my phone was PWNED before .... let me try restore mode". I did the following:

    - Turn off iphone
    - Shut down itunes
    - Hold the home button down and connect the cable to it. Continue hold home until hearing the PC connection tone. Iphone shows picture of Steve Jobs.
    - Launch itunes. Itunes recognizes the phone in restore mode right way.

I hold shift and click restore and select custom firmware. Itunes begin to restore the custom firmware to the phone right away (no white screen). The screen on iphone is black, with picture of Apple icon and spining wheel. (Apple icon because I did choose any custom logo). This process is about 5-10 minutes.

When it finishes, phone reboot and I have a fully functional phone with Cydia.

I hope you find this useful.

ps: when you encounter error, don't panic. I see people try to restore to 1.1.4 and try many crazy things. Don't. Just be patience. If you start out with a working phone and encounter 1601 error, you should be able to reboot the phone and it should be able to boot up like before.

People is wrong to say winpwn is buggy or it sucks. I have to disagree to a certain extend. For me it did its job which is building custom firmware & pwnage. The problem on Windows Platform is the tricky DFU and restore process. On the Mac Platform, it is always perfect for me.

    Hi dtube.
Thanks for sharing us your experiences
That would help many members : )
Oh, I want to ask if you chose NOT to update baseband, then there is no Bootneuter lanching, right? And will I use my simcard (not legit) ? Last time I update to 2.0, bootneuter said there was error 46 when flashing baseband but then everything has been fine. Now I don't want to reflash the baseband again if it is not necessary.
    Thank you : )

Yes, if you choose not to update baseband then the bootneuter selection cannot be selected as well as the rest under it. So the end result is you don't have bootneuter app inside the custom built firmware and therefore it will not be on the iphone.

You can have non ATT sim card in it.

If you had 2.0 running on the phone and you just want to winpwn 2.01 firmware, there is no need to do the bootneuter again because the baseband in 2.01 is the same. When a new firmware has different baseband, you have to do bootneuter again.
