I replaced the back cover of my iphone and was very careful not to damage anything. as far as i can see, there is no damage to cables and nothing has been damaged. However when i try to start it, the apple logo comes up for a while then the phone crashes and the logo dissapears. I can put it into DFU mode by holding the home button and connecting it to the pc but when i try and restore i get the error "The iphone "iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (23)"

Please help, i have lost use of my iphone

Error 23 is usually a hardware radio/baseband problem. On 3G and 3GS this can't be fixed (except by Apple). Some have claimed to fix this on 2G - but I doubt that.

Error 23 usually indicates that iTunes / iPhone is not receiving the correct response from the baseband / communications board when attempting to communicate with it. I can appreciate that explanation is fairly vague, but unfortunately that's just the way it is. This can be caused by many problems -- it's true that it can be caused by a completely destroyed baseband (which is a software problem), but it's highly unlikely. It's more likely that there has been a hardware level failure on the comms board. With that said, as one of the previous posters mentioned, you can pretty much do two things here:

    1) If you feel like tempting fate and really think it has to do with a corrupt baseband, you can downgrade to a previous firmware version 1.1.4, use ZiPhone to wipe your baseband (I hate ZiPhone, I just want to say that. But for this purpose I don't think there's another program that does this.), then re-flash the baseband by doing a stock 2.2 upgrade. This should re-flash the baseband and ensure that it's clean. If you can't complete these steps, it's likely because you have a hardware issue.
    2) Search the forums for the general way to flash a clean firmware onto a device with an Error 23 -- this won't *fix* the problem, but it will ensure your device has legit apple Firmware on it so if you need to repair, they won't refuse due to jailbreak.

    Good luck!

I had the same problem and finallyafter trouble shooting , i founf that it is cable problem, tried with friends cable and it worked like charm.
If you had tried on so many computers,if the cable is having problem it cannot be solved. cheap cables form meritline caused the problem.

Restore error 23 cannot be fixed by software on any device. You are reactivating a very old thread, when there are actually other more useful threads related to the same error.

If you are jailbroken and you want to try and get the phone replaced under warranty.

    See www.hackint0sh.org/f203/104422.htm for details

Note this only works for 3G and 3GS phones. If you have a 3GS, you need a saved SHSH for iOS 3.1.3 or lower to be able to remove trace of your jailbreak.

Error 23 cannot be fixed by software on any iPhone model.

On the 2G, it is possible to swap the commsboard with a confirmed "OK" commsboard, this should fix error 23.

On the 3G and higher, Apple have merged the main logic board and the commsboard. So to fix this problem you have to replace the entire logic board (which is usually not cost effective)
