Volkspost is correct. I can confirm
Use ipwner once by selecting the custom firmware already created.
After that, the custom ipsw can be use again and again.

I see. So if you have a custom firmware, you still have to pwn itunes first and then you can use the custom firmware on any number of phones.

    iPhone (OTB 1.1.1 / Currently 3.1)
    Unlock, activation, jailbreak: PwnageTool 3.1
    City Fido, Vancouver

You only have to iPwn iTunes once. It is pwnaged then meaning will accept an iPhone in DFU mode. From then on just go ahead and use the custom firmware files on DFUed iPhones.
As I said, once you have an already pwnaged iPhone (e.g. pwnaged at 1.1.4), dont DFU, just simple restore/recovery and then procede as described.

Thanks for clearing that up. Hate the sloppy use of words, like all those tutorials and posts that still talk about "pwning your iPhone with WinPwn". WinPwn doesn't pwn your iPhone, it pwns iTunes. And then, by DFU-restoring to a modified .ipsw, your phone ends up in a "pwned" state.

EDIT: I think it is worth mentioning that PwnageTool 2.1 doesn't modify iTunes anymore. It also doesn't directly pwn the iPhone. It manages to trick iTunes some other way into thinking it's restoring to a genuine Apple firmware. So PwnageTool is now really only a firmware maker, nothing else. The result is still that after a DFU restore to such a modified .ipsw, the iPhone continues its life pwned.

    iPhone 3GS / 3.1.2 JB (PwnageTool) / 04.26.08 carrier-locked, Carrier Logo Fixer / Cydia / 1000 posts on Hackint0sh

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

Absolutely correct. And next time - e.g. when Apples FW got an update plus a new version of your favourite pwnagetool is available - you of cause build a new firmware, do not have to iPwn iTunes again.
This time you use simple restore/recovery mode on the iPhone cause it is already pwnaged. Then restore to the new custom firmware. DFU mode on an already pwnaged iPhone often leads to 16xx errors when trying to restore to the new custom firmware.

    just to complete it

this may seem dumb but i rally liked using winpwn for the countdown timer to put ifone in DFU mode.

without winpwns DFU helper i find it harder to put my fone in DFU

is there a way to run the winpwn DFU helper?
i've built my custom IPSW but because my dial pad locks me out, meaning i can't make fone calls, i have to restore. i've done this 5 times so now all i need is to use itunes to restore the custom ipsw but i have ttrouble getting it into DFU

this is the part i like about winpwn when it gives u a count down timer to help you put in dfu and works everytime

so i need winpwn to help me put it in dfu
thus far i have to rebuild a new ipsw everytime because i need the DFU countdown timer to help me put it in DFU

why is a feature thats so usefull not avaiable once you create the file??
\think about if you have several iphones that all need restoring then the countdown timer comes in real handy.

Default I updated from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 without entering DFU

For me, It all worked out in normal restore mode.
(characterized by iPhone screen showing iTunes logo with a dock)

I never need to enter DFU mode. for both pwning and restoring customized.ipsw
