No just go ahread, create a custom firmware 2.0.1 (for 2G iPhones!) and DFU restore to it. Can be done on a Mac or Windows, both easy.

Sorry if this sounds noobie-ish but I haven't found an answer to what I want to do. I have a 1.1.1 2G iPhone and want to upgrade it to 1.1.4 (no, not 2.X just yet). I think I can use winpwn 2.0.0.4 to do it but I am not 100% certain. Also, which version of iTunes do I need (does it matter?).

Thanks, all the guides I saw were for upgrading to 2.0.x

Check out this one if you want to go to 1.1.4

I would restore it to 1.1.4(offical) and then use iliberty or iplus to unlock/jailbreah it. Have a look here http://www.iphone-hacks.com/forums/about1095.html.

OK, thanks guys. I tried building my own ipsw with winpwn and it failed miserably. I ended up upgrading to 1.1.4 through iTunes and unlocking/jailbreaking with iLiberty.
