I find the tutorial to be confusingly written (if, in fact, I'm looking at the right one - http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36686 ).
I tried to walk through the simple mode of PwnageTool and couldn't finish because, as I read it, I don't need/want bootloader files as I have no intention of unlocking my phone. Is that right? And yet, Pwnage Tool won't let me get beyond "Would you like to browse for the bootloader 3.9 file?" I click 'no' and get "sry, I haz FAIL!" And I'm back at the beginning.
Do I need these bootloader files even if I'm not going to be unlocking the phone? Or do I go with the advanced mode and uncheck "neuter bootloader"? I must be some kind of idiot because everyone's saying how dead easy Pwnage Tool is and I can't seem to figure it out, dammit!

make sure to sync all data (addresses, calendar, music, videos) etc first. Doublecheck to make sure they are on your PC.
Then restore to 2.0.1 custom.
On the first run of iTunes it will offer to "restore from backup". Dont, choose "setup as new iPhone". After that sync the iphone and set it up.
You will be loosing the sms history, call history, Map bookmarks, known Wi-Fi network etc. BUT: your iphone will work. Using the backup might bring back preference files to the iPhone taht dont work or screw up the use of 2.0.1
So manually replacing sqlite db files doesn't work on 2.0.1 anymore?

(sorry if this turns out to be a double post - I got a blank page the first time and there was no sign of this post when I came back to the thread)
Okay, so I'd like to recap where I'm at in the hopes that somebody will help me figure out whether or not it's safe to go ahead and upgrade my phone with the generated custom firmware.
Starting point - a 1st gen iphone on 1.1.1 jailbroken using the Safari exploit but never unlocked and no desire to unlock.
Here's what I did in Pwnage Tool 2.0.2...
1. Selected iPhone, of course.
2. Selected the official Apple 2.0.1 firmware download (1,1 version)
3. General Settings:
- unchecked 'Activate the Phone'
- left 'Enable Baseband Update' unchecked
- left 'Disable Partition Wipeout' checked
- adjusted 'Root partition size' to 512
4. Bootneuter Settings:
- unchecked 'Neuter Bootloader'
5. Cydia Settings:
- I did nothing. Nada. Zip.
6. Custom Packages Settings:
- I did nothing (left both Cydia Installer and Installer checked)
7. Custom Logos Settings:
- unchecked both 'Boot Logo' and 'Recovery Logo'
8. BUILD
Pwnage Tool built the custom firmware, of course, and it's on the desktop. Pwnage Tool then wanted to immediately go about of updating my phone but I chickened out and force-quit the app (there didn't appear to be another way to cancel the operation).
Can anyone tell me if I've done everything correctly to this point? I hope?

Oh, that still works. The sqlite database files usually dont cause any trouble. But with restore you will get back tons of preferences, they may cause problems when using the once from 1.1.1.
I cant recall if the structure of the bd's changed from like 1.1.1 to 2.0.1 but I guess they will work. If not you can just delete them via SFTP
hope that helps

Once that is done, you put the phone in DFU mode and hit shift-restore (in iTunes) to select the custom image you just created.
When done, your phone is on 2.0.1.
The most important is to create your custom image correctly (boot partition = 512, don't select custom logo stuff) and put the phone in DFU Mode. I used 600 for my boot partition.
I selected 550 for my boot PARTITION..and i selected Winpwn as my custom logo ...so now when iphone starts up i see Winpwn and the Apple logo with the world inside the Apple....Winpwn the World baby.... ...instead of the Old Grey Apple....Very cool new bootup logo.
iPhone 1.0.2 OTB->Virginized->1.1.4 FW->Winpwn FW 2.0.1 Quickpwn 2.0.1 to FW 2.2.1->RedsnOw->3.0 FW itunes3.0.1FW->RedsnOw 8 to unlock->RedSnow 0.9.2 upgrade to 3.1.2->iPhone 2g 3.1.2 and as of July 30th,2010->iPhone 4-32GB & iPhone 4-16Gb->Unlocked
Can someone give me a thumbs up click on Reputation ...thanks

You are in the winpwn section, right. But you are on a Mac if you use PwnageTool 2.0.2.
Let me know if this is the case.

No problem.
To put this to an end here in the winpwn section: Your settings are ok, you dont want the iPhone unlocked.
I set root partition always to 550 MB, but thats up to you.
On Mac iTunes 7.7.1 should be installed. Connect the iPhone and the Mac, shut down the iPhone. When shut down hold Home and Start button for exectly 10 seconds then release Start button but keep holding Home button for another 10 seconds (or a bit more). (-> this is called DFU mode, iPhone screen should be black all the time). iTunes will start up and find an iphone in recovery mode. Let go of Home button, Option-click on "Restore" and selevt the custom firmware.
