I tried the same thing and it worked, too! I was using winpwn 2.0.0.3, and had been getting the 1601 error when trying to restore the custom firmware from iTunes. I, too, had been using iLiberty+ to put the iPhone in DFU mode. Using the manual method described on iClarified worked for me, and I was able to unlock my phone!

I have the same problem.
1. I've restored to the 2.0 firmware (custom)
2. Everething went well and 2.0 was loaded.
3. For some reason i've decided to lauch the boot neuter icon
4. I switched the bootloader from 3.9 to 4.6
5. Waited until flash finished
6. Reboot
and that's it. my iphone is stuck on the boot screen since then.
nothing i do helps. in DFU mode i cannot restore to any of the firmwares -
tried to restore to 1.1.4, original 2.0, custom 2.0 and always get "error 1604".
Tried: restart computer, different USB ports
PLEASE HELP!

Trying different USB ports is not going to help .. neither restarting computer etc. etc.
Rebooting phone will.
Hold power button till the apple logo appears .. now the phone is in restore mode.
Connect it to computer and restore the "factory" software
Once done .. put the phone in DFU mode and restore custom ipsw file.

The solution from iphonelinux forum doesn't work.
To fix 1601 error on 1st generation iphone I turned the phone to restoration mode, THEN to DFU mode. After that iTunes allows me to install the new firmware.

Hi there,
I update a custom firmware with iTunes.
I had installed previously another custom firmware 2.0 which just activated the phone.
Everything worked ok until the flash of BootNeuter 2.0
The bootloader flash worked fine
The baseband flash, supposed to be arround 2 mins failed... I mean, 1/4 hour later, I decided to reboot the phone...
Now, I am unable to restore my phone, neither factory firmaware 2.0 nor custom 2.0, with DFU or just restore mode... Always get 1604 error
My iPhone is 1.1.4 OTB, initially Ziphoned 3.0, then with iLiberty+
Any idea ? Looks bricked...

i got the 1604 error.. so what i did is i downgraded to 1.1.4 orignal firmware using Itunes 7.5 after i uninstall Itunes 7.7. I then used Iliberty to unlock and jailbreak then downgraded the baseband using bootneuter.
after all that i upgraded back to 2.0 using winpwn image and all is fine now
I have tried it & this solution to erroe 1604 has been provided by menber DownUnder

iPhone [1.0.2 OTB]Unlocked -->1.1.3 ziphone -->1.1.4 iLiberty -->1.1.4 WinPwn 1.0 -->2.0 WinPwn 2.0 --> WinPwn 2.2 --> Yellowsn0w 2.2

iPhone is the best cellphone I ever used

@TATANKA : thx a lot for your reply
Actualy, I saw your post (on another thread) after sending mine. I confirm, iTune 7.5 saved me. I succeed to restore my phone in 1.1.4 & activated it -but i don't know why- I will try again the 2.0 (it installs now)
I keep preciously this 7.5 version
Thanks again
