Do this:
- connect phone to computer and turn it OFF (make sure it is off and not just the screen save)
- shutdown itunes
- hold down power button + home at the same time for about 9-10 sec.
- Release the power button but continue to hold the home button.
(if you release the power button after seeing an apple logo then you are too late. You must start over.)
- As you continue to hold the home button , you will hear the connection tone from the computer. You may see the little message at the lower right hand corner of the computer saying something like "detect DFU ...". If you don't see it, that's fine.
- one you hear the connection tone, you can release the home. The iphone screen should be black. If you see the pic like you have, you are not in DFU.
- Itunes should launch automatically. If not, run it. It will display message "detect phone in recovery mode ...."
- From here, you can shift-click restore and select the 2.0.1 firmware image you have downloaded.
This is one of the MOST clear and detail about DFU and how to get DFU i see.
It will sure help many peeps.
thanks

What does it mean when you do all the right DFU moves, get the disconnect tones and open iTunes, wait for the iPod and you get "An iPod has been detected but could not be properly identified. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (1601)"
Can I sync my iPhone to my Newton?

you should be getting a connection tone not disconnect because you start the DFU process with phone in OFF state.
The only time I experienced 1601 error is if I try to restore a previously pwned phone via DFU mode. In such case, I put the phone in restore mode instead of DFU.

i m also gettin the same error.....1601...iphone not recognised...
i had just used winpwn to use custom logos...so u mean my phone is pwned....???
i hav created custom firmware for 2.0.1 so how to go about now..??
-
- if the phone has 2.0 running then you want to to put phone in "restore mode"
- if the phone is runing 1.x firmware then you put the phone in DFU mode.

hello dtube...i really appreciate ur efforts helping the people like us,,,,
i tried al the things like restore mode dfu mode...blah blah.....only problem is tat i cant restore or update my firmware..i m in 1.1.4....i keep gettin 16XX damn errors....
At this point, I thought to myself: "may because my phone was PWNED before .... let me try restore mode". I did the following:
- Turn off iphone
- Shut down itunes
- Hold the home button down and connect the cable to it. Continue hold home until hearing the PC connection tone. Iphone shows picture of Steve Jobs.
- Launch itunes. Itunes recognizes the phone in restore mode right way.
i did this tooo...
everythin worked till last step....i pressed shift + restore...it started extracting firmware...it started SHOWING RESTORING FIRMWARE....tats it..gets stuck and i ll get those errors... then i have to use iLIBERTY to kick out of the restore mode...i cant do anythin other than that.....
I HAD USED WINPWN FOR CHANGING LOGOS EARLIER...so my restore logo will BE THE IRRITATING LINUX DOLL.,..,
HOPE U GOT MY PROBLEM......pls let me kno wat to do....i tried al different crazy things

The Steve Jobs picture is a clear indication that your phone has been pwned before.
Don't try to get fancy, just create a custom firmware without changing the logo. Put phone in restore mode like you did before and use your custom firmware w/o logo.
Try it again. If your logo is not conforming, it will not work.
ps: I got your PM. I don't like helping in private. I prefer to keep it here so everyone else can see. I hope you understand.

OK, now i get it. I got my phone in to DFU mode and tried Shift+restore and always got an error. But when i let itunes to restore/update (without shift) i was succesfull (1.1.4). iPhone turned on (yes dam yes). iTunes told that i have wrong sim card
. Tried to unlock with iliberty+ and and everything was ok except unlock (i so on screen that it failed). And now i have jailbraken activated iphone. I can`t unlock. Why? I have 1.1.4 FW, 04.04.05_G Modem FW, BL 4.6_M3S2. When i`m tried to upgrade to 2.0.1 (in DFU) i got error 1. I want to have unlocked 2.xx, what should i do?
Sorry for bad english.

Finaly everything is in the right place. My iPhone is working perfectly. I did enother restore to 1.1.4, then U/A/J with iLiberty+. Restored to 2.0.1, then winpwn 2.0.1 and restored pwned ipsw. Upgraded to 2.0.2 and used Quickpwn.
I want to say thanks for everybody, especially dtube. Thanks iLiberty+, WinPwn, QuickPwn, Ziphone creators.
Sorry for bad english
