Just curious: How do you know that Cydia is slowing down your iPhone?

Were you previously running the same exact version of the iPhone OS, with the same exact options, configuration, mail accounts, WiFi vs EDGE connectivity, etc -- but without Cydia installed?

If so, then I suppose you already know the answer to your question (since you've already done it).

If not, then how do you know it's Cydia? Is it just because other people have blamed Cydia?

NOTE: I have no idea whether/not Cydia slows things down. But I do know that OS 2.0.1 is nowhere near as 'snappy' as OS 1.1.x. Upgrading to a 2.x OS will be a disappointment (as far as overall speed) - regardless of whether/not you install Cydia.

I'm very interested to know whether/not Cydia actually adds to the overall slowness of OS 2.x (I can believe it does - but have never seen any proof).

I have yet to see any true analysis done (other than "I uninstalled Cydia and it seems faster"). There are so many factors involved - like WiFi/EDGE connectivity that could change from moment to moment (affecting comparisons).

I've seen NON-Pwned phones that are also slow (and they obviously don't have Cydia/never had it).

A good side-by-side comparison (Youtube video?) where the only difference is whether/not Cydia was installed would be really nice. Completely disabling WiFi/EDGE (Airplane mode "ON") would be helpful in the comparisons (to remove external variables that could affect performance).

I understand the resistence to pwn your phone again (or even to restore from any firmware again) - it takes a lot of time/reconfiguration each time.

I've got a Pwned 2.0.1 iPhone (with Cydia and Installer), and a NEVER-Pwned 2.0.1 iPod Touch. I haven't done extensive testing, but I notice that app startup time (like, when I click on the "Settings" icon) is similar on both (they both have a 2-3 second 'lag' before any real info is shown on the screen).

But, that comparison is based on my memory - I haven't actually tried them side-by-side in a NON-WiFi/etc testing environment as I suggested. I could be wrong: maybe the Touch is in fact faster. I'll try to do some side-by-side comparisons soon. Although, this is comparing iPod Touch with iPhone - I don't have two iPhones or two Touch's to test with.

well the only difference between an iphone and an ipod touch is that an iphone has a baseband so you can put it in airplane mode and it should be pretty accurate as if you had 2 ipod touches another thing is i would test speeds without entering cydia then going into cydia scroll around a bit then test speeds then download something small from cydia and test speeds to see in which way IF cydia affects speed

    To be a bit pedantic:

Since OP appears to have more than one Mac, I'm guessing they used the Mac PwnageTool (not WinPwn), so I suppose this post really belongs in PwnageTool's section.

(or, more correctly: in the non-existent Cydia section)
