[2.1] Updating from 1.1.4
Is there an easy route for updating to 2.1 from 1.1.4 (2g)?
I need activation and unlock.
All the topics here on 2.1 talk about updating from 2.0.x and I haven't been able to update to 2.0 yet. (It's my understanding the unlock happens in the 2.0.x winpwn, which stays on through the 2.1 update)
So, do I have to get in the 2.0.2 installed first? Is it even still possible?

Easiest thing you can do is find a guide for getting from 1.1.4 to 2.0.x
Once there, with activation and unlock done. Just let itunes 8.0 do an upgrade like normal. Your activation and unlock will still be there. No jailbreak though.
There is a method for jailbreak on Mac that works great. The windows one seems a bit flaky to me.
Currently I am at 2.1 with activation/unlock and no Jailbreak.
1.1.4 iLiberty+ -> WinPwned -> BootNeuter -> Custom Pwned to 2.0 -> Upgrade to 2.1 -> QuickPwned
-> Restored to 2.2.1 -> WinPwned -> Upgrade to 3.0 -> Redsnow'd

if you are on windows winpwn is not able yet to create custm FW for 2.1 you will only be able to create for 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.0.2
if you are on mac you can use the latest pwnage tool and you will be able to create custom fw for 2.1, my advice to you is to go directly to 2.1 is the best fw out there right now.
you can follow the guides on this site:

I used WinPwn(guide- http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/25/winpwn-20-guide/) to go from 1.1.4. I had a backup in iTunes before I used WinPwn. When I was finished(2.0.1) I loaded iTunes and restored my backup. This worked just fine.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but it seems to fit:
after reading and searching a lot of threads, I'm still sort of confused on how to get
my 1.1.4-phone (unlocked with iLiberty) to the 2.1 firmware. Assuming I already
have a custom 2.1 version created with the PwnageTool on someone elses MAC,
can't I just do a shift-restore using iTunes 8.0 on my PC and will end up with a
working unlocked phone, of am I missing something here ?
Always read something like upgrade to 2.0.2 first....doesn't seem to be necessary
though, according to other authors / threads.
May be due to the fact, that I'm no native speaker/reader, and therefore don't get
the real meaning.. Thanks for reading.

No you cant, if u do ull prob get a 1604 error
your phone needs to be PWNED (able to use custom FW)
now days i believe its itunes that needs to be pwned which in turn pwnes your phone
so if i were you i would create own custom FW

It can work if you start by putting your phone in DFU mode (I did exactly that and my phone works). Only drawback: you'll still have the old baseband firmware, 04.04.05, instead of the new 04.05.04. But no-one seems able to point out any real improvement between those versions...
iPhone 3GS / 3.1.2 JB (PwnageTool) / 04.26.08 carrier-locked, Carrier Logo Fixer / Cydia / 1000 posts on Hackint0sh
Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.
Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
* on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
* on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).
