Wrong graphics card
GeForce 9800 GTX
4 GiB RAM
ASUS Maximus Formula
I'm using this Version:
So the only thing I actually want to do is run
Team Fortress 2 one time. Nothing more, nothing less.
And just because of that:
Call me crazy later ok?
I never even touched a Mac before so I actually don't have any idea what I'm doing. I'd like to know but I just don't have enough time to do that because the offer ends in 2 days.
So here's rughly what I did during the last 16 hours of my free time:
First I tried to do it with VMware Workstation. Downloaded a OS X image, installed everything. Steam said this OS X Version is too old. No updates available Doh!
Tried another, installed everything and that's how it ended:
After giving up VPCs I tried to install the version mentioned above on my PC.
Installed without problems (except that it first didn't recognize my HDD and after fixing that couldn't write on it, used a external USB drive in the end). But it didn't boot. Kernel Panic. I didn't find any clue in all that stuff that was written on the screen.
So I tried a different version. To make it short: It crashed with a Kernel Panic too. But it said something about my SATA Controller. So I disabled it and OS X booted without problems. But it didn't detect any network devices. There was a file called something like "ethernet.kext" on the DVD so I installed it after finding out how to do that. But it looks like the OS didn't like it too much and refused to boot.
Then I tried the hazard version again and it worked including network and everything. So I tired to run Team Fortress 2 and guess what. Exactly the same error that I had on the Virtual Machine before.
So I clicked on About this Mac - More info - Hardware - Graphics/Display and it said "ATI Radeon HD 4830" (remember that I actually have a 9800 GTX). The minimum Mac requirements say "NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher, or ATI X1600 or higher".
Looks like it has something to do with "EVOenabler" but I couldn't find any information.
I thought that I maybe somehow can fake the graphics card to pass the hardware check (since it seemed to do that already) and used google a bit.
I somehow ended up there:
EVOEnabler for X1000-series ATI Radeon under Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - InsanelyMac Forum
So I downloaded this file, installed it and now it says "ATI Radeon X1800XL" instead of the 4830. But the game still wont launch with the exact same error.
And that's my current situation. I don't have an idea on what to do now. Maybe it would help if OS X would detect my graphics cars correctly, but I don't have any idea on how to do that. Maybe with another kext but I couldn't find one.
Don't know if that helps but there is a program called EFIStudio (no idea what that does but EFI was something like the BIOS right?) and it detects my card correctly (PCI Info).
Did the same thing, I want those thingies, too.
I have a ATI X1800 XT, I just want to run the game. But it crashes for me cause I have no drivers.
Is there a way to start the game?
I also tried it in textmode, but that crashes, too.
Nevermind. I managed it. For everyone who might stumble across this thread:
System - Library - CoreServices and find the file SystemVersion.plist.
Copy it, edit the copy, find "ProductUserVisibleVersion" and "Product Version". Change both to 10.6.2. Replace the original with the copy. The game will crash without even entering the menu but it's enough.
