Default Upgrading JB iPhone 3G from 3.0.1/04.26.08 to 3.1.2

Grretings. I have a Jailbroken/Unlocked 3G-16Gb iPhone (from Ultrasn0w/Cydia) running 3.0.1 - 04.26.08. Everything works fine with my phone (iPhone purchased in Aug/09) but I started founding some Apps requiring Version 3.1.2 to work. My questions are:
    1) Do you think I should upgrade to 3.1.2 (I know there is not yet a good version for upgrading to 3.1.3, also it is not really necesasry), or just stay in 3.0.1?
    2) In case I should upgrade to 3.1.2, which is the best method? I have been reading through forums and it seems one of the best solutions is Blackra1n / Blacksn0w (I use Windows). Anyhow, it seems before applying blackra1n/blackn0w, I would need to upgrade my iPhone from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2 (temporarily loosing my jailbreak/unlock this is scary). Do I really need to do it or Blackra1n/Blacksn0w will do their magic anyhow with my current OS and modem firmware? Very important: I need my WiFi connection to continue working as I use it daily.
Any other tips/suggestions will be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    1. Yes 3.1.2 is a little less buggy and more stable than 3.0.1
    2. Do NOT use blackra1n or blacksn0w, they might be easy to use and everything looks good initially but you risk other problems afterwards. Most importantly, you have a 20% chance that your wifi will break using blacksn0w. I know you use windows, it is not a good enough excuse. Use Pwnagetool custom ipsw and ultrasn0w, this even works with OS 3.1.3!!. Blackra1n and blacksn0w will NOT work with OS 3.0.1

If you keep 04.26.08 then you can always downgrade back to OS 3.0.1 if you really want. For you, there is generally way back from a baseband upgrade.

Blackra1n has some limitations in hacktivation and performs a very light weight jailbreak.

Blacksn0w triggers an apple bug randomly 20% of the time and this results in you losing wifi (there are no successful methods for geting wifi back permanently yet)

The author of both has temporarily stopped working on iPhone hacks and is not interested in updating either tool. So you will get less help with these tools.

Default Upgrading JB iPhone 3G from 3.0.1/04.26.08 to 3.1.2

Olethros, thanks so much for your quick and effective reply/advice. I am definitively keeping myself away from blackra1n/blacksn0w and will focus, as you suggest, on using Pwnagetool custom ipsw and Ultrasn0w (in fact, as I previously mentioned, my phone was originally worked with Ultrasn0w). Excuse my ignorance; could you let me know where may I find good guide/instructions on how to get the Pwnagetool custom ipsw that I need and how to install with Ultrasn0w/Cydia?

If you are not on mac.. then you can still use pwnagetool custom ipsw. You just need to download a pre-made custom ipsw from the net.

Because such ipsw files are apple copyrighted material, we are not allowed to link to them from hackint0sh. We can only link to original IPSW hosted by Apple

Ultrasn0w can be installed from Cydia. Cydia is pre-installed in the custom ipsw.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I knew about the wifi issues with blacksn0w, but I thought a simple network reset got it working again - I was unaware of permanent damage!!!! OMG.. C'mon Geohotz - That's BS dude, you seriously need to address this and put down the PS3 controller!
