Default "upgrading " iphone 3G to iPad baseband.. is it safe?

i have been doing a lot of reading online about it, and i would like to try it. I have the tools downloaded and on my desktop... im just worried about bricking my phone...however stupid that might be. but seeing as how this is the only phone i have... you know my concern.

I already used redsnow to jailbreak it, and i plan on going to T-Mobile soon.. but for the moment I still have AT&T (the official GSM carrier for iphone in USA) and ATM have no reason to unlock. How soon will I get T-Mobile? I dunno, a couple of months, perhaps. would it be better to unlock now and get any bugs figured out now, or wait until the Dev-Team puts out a hack to downgrade the baseband from the iPad baseband to the normal iPhone baseband?

note that i am not worried about voiding apples warranty, because its not like they give much of a warranty, anyway.
    thanks guys

The downgrade for iPad baseband is still at the "yes we think we can do it, but we need to do a lot more testing/development before it can be released" stage.
The iPad baseband has clearly documented downsides. GPS problems at 4.2.1, restore only with custom IPSW.

I suggest you don't put ipad baseband on the device at this time.
Wait ... Firmware 4.3 is around the corner. Once 4.3 is out, DevTeam may release a new unlock or new method.

Agreed. We're very close to the new iOS revision and new baseband, and having upgraded one device to the iPad baseband and having experienced some of the worse of the issues with it, I can safely say it's not something I'd recommend to anyone unless they absolutely, positively had to do it in order to use their phone and couldn't wait for the few weeks it will be until the next revision of the software comes out.

Glad to hear it worked well for you -- the most recent versions of the tool have solved a lot of the issues with it, and it *IS* definitely a workable solution to people stuck in certain circumstances, I just worry about the finality of it -- until there's a legit and reliable downgrade for it or a way to restore back to 100% stock, I worry -- same reason I don't like boot logos or animated boot processes, if my phone takes a dive I want to be able to pretend it was never jailbroken and I want the person at Apple to not be able to (easily) prove me wrong. The 06.15 baseband is a huge red flag for them if they ever have the opportunity to see it.
