There is no other way via software to downgrade than fuzzyband. Fuzzyband only works on 3G iPhones that shipped from the factory with baseband bootloader 5.8

Why wait for 4.2?? Yes there is a strategy, but also it takes time to turn a "oh i crashed the baseband" into a stable reliable unlock. Most of the time the crash does not turn out to be exploitable.

The strategy is that 4.2 is likely the last "feature" release of iOS 4.x - the only thing that will follow are bug fixes. So... by waiting to release the unlock for 4.2, they know it will continue to work for "careful" users until iOS 5.0 is released in approx 6 months.

Thread closed this is yet another duplicate. The warnings about safe upgrading to preserve unlock have been around for years now. The dev team doesn't owe you an unlock just because you accidentally upgraded or purchased an iPhone with new baseband.
