So I'm very much so new at jailbreaking/unlocking Iphones.
I recently purchased an iphone off eBay. It's a 3g 16gb, and it came already jailbroken and unlocked. It was having a few issues so I decided to research and re-jailbreak and unlock it myself.

I have been able to do everything just fine, but now I'm not getting service.
It's currently running on firmware 4.0.0
I have:
Installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled ultrasn0w 1.1-1
Disabled 3g
toggled airplane mode on and off
Restarted/Rebooted my device
Completely restarted from scratch from jailbreaking again up to installing ultrasn0w.

I'm pretty much at a complete loss at what to do at this point...

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

What baseband version does it have?

I updated it and it's now running on 4.0.1 (still not working)

As far as baseband firmware.. I'm not exactly sure what that is.
If it's the modem firmware that's running at 05.14.02

baseband firmware is the same as modem firmware

This phone has been upgraded to iOS 4.1 - the modem firmware you have comes with iOS 4.1.

Unless the serial number of the 3G starts with xx827 or lower then you are stuck without an unlock for a long time (maybe forever).

To be 100% clear, there is no unlock for 05.14.02. I don't expect another unlock from the iPhone dev team until next July. There were clear warnings against upgrading to 4.1 and anyone buying an iPhone second hand in a period where people are looking to get rid of "accidental upgrades that can't be unlocked" must check the baseband before buying.

If the serial number is lower than that is there a possibility of restoring it?

What's the difference between those serial numbers that are lower than that and the ones higher?

This tutorial explains it all.. Basically it works only with 3G iPhones manufactured and sold in the first few weeks after the 3G iPhone was released.

Apple found out about this and quickly started making 3G iPhones with an updated baseband bootloader that could not be downgraded.

Rather than ask the same question hundreds of others have asked, search and you will find most things are already answered.

Sorry, I've just been doing a ton of research the last few days trying to figure out why things aren't working and that hadn't ever come up.

Hi I know you posted this a while back but I too am having the same problems as you and am having no success with getting it sorted out. Did you have any luck resolving the ultrasn0w unlock and no service problem.

Did you bother to read the thread? This guy's problem was that the baseband/modem firmware was too new and Ultrasn0w doesn't (yet) support unlocking that baseband/modem firmware version.

Have you checked your baseband/modem firmware version? Has your iPhone EVER been upgraded to iOS 4.1, or iOS 4.2 betas or iOS 4.2GM? If so.. you need to wait.

I have quite the same issue.
In my Iphone 3GS 32 GB, v. 4.1 (8B117) Firmware 05.14.02, serial 88013XXXX after jailbroken with redsn0w, I run redsn0w in Cydia, and in theory unlocked...
But no network... The device read the new SIM Card Data...etc.

But no network...

Any help, please??
