My old SIM card also worked in the 2G but after reading several posts saying people went and contacted their carrier for a new card combined with the fact that I knew the card was over 8 years old, I called customer service and they directed me to a local dealer where they activated a new card for me.
Edit: no need to turn on/off airplane mode. Just turn it on and it shows up.
my card also is waaay old, will try that, Im trying to use it in an apple partner (claro argentina) so I know the network is not a problem.
I have a friend with a 3G purchased at the carrier stores (same carrier as me) will ask him to loan me his sim to check before changing mine, that should clear the issue if its related to the simcard or not.
Will post results as soon as I see him.
If you are with an official carrier you do not need UltraSnow and should :
1) Clean restore.
2) Insert SIM and let iTunes activate
3) Run RedSn0w
If you then want to run ultraSn0w you can.
If you don't activate an official SIM in iTunes RedSn0w trieas to hactivate and that causes problems.
You missunderstood me :) Im with an official Carrier (Claro_ar) but Im not an official customer nor the phone was purchased from this carrier (AFAIK)
Just in case, I restored again from DFU with my Claro simcard inserted all along the process, when itunes finishes and iphone restarts, I configure it as a new phone, itunes updated the carrier settings and a message in the iphone said "waiting for activation" then it dissapeared, but I get no service.
New IMEI found meessage was sent to carrier
Tried disabling 3G (Claro supports 3G) going back and forth to airplane mode and still no service.
Restarted iphone and the message saying waiting for activation is still there.
Found this image on the web, this is where I am at:

I can use the included apps, but still cant use the phone
How much should I wait? Should I redsn0w now?
Thanks!
[edit]
redsnowing did not help, so I restored from DFU and now Im here again:

Usable but Locked, unactivated and not jailbroken iphone 3G, no service message.
has any1 managed to figure out the no service problem?
i got my sim replace today - still nothing
i read somewhere tht, you should use a custom restore.ipsw
does tht help? anyone done it?
Since Im trying to activate a 16gb 3G using my simcard and my carrier is an official apple partner (Im not an official iphone customer, just regular gsm user) today I purchased a pay as you go simcard from the only provider in Argentina that is not an apple partner (Personal)
Inserted the sim, put the phone in dfu>restore>redsn0wed>ultrasn0wed and I still don't have signal.
Im begining to think that there is a problem with ultrasn0w that affect a small number of 16gb 3g iphone users.
It would be great if someone from the DevT or with knowledge on the workings of ultrasn0w to shed some light here. I for sure will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Hello and sorry for my english, i have the same problem that you, i have an american iphone 3g 16gb white and i have no signal. I have restored, jailbreak and ultrasnowed several times and it is impossible for me to get service...
Im a bit desperated. Waiting for solutions from Dev Team :P
I have a 16 Gig Black 3G using T-Mobile Usa and was using it flawlessly unlocked with yellowsn0w before deciding to upgrade to 3.0 today. Once I finished jailbreaking mine and going through the steps provided to unlock it with ultrasn0w, I got the same error a lot of people are getting. No Service, No Sim, etc....It did work originally for a couple of minutes. I became frustrated and read everything I could find then noticed some people talking about the Sim being the problem. I popped out my Sim and noticed it was a little older looking....no pink T and yellow numbers.....Then I grabbed the Sim out of my wife's phone...Nice glossy little Sim card with a pink T and black numbers....Popped it in and all worked perfectly. I looked in an extra phone we had upstairs that was never activated and it had a Sim that matched my wife's. Called T-Mobile transferred my number to that newer Sim and all is perfect in my world. Hope this helps some of you out there. Get a newer Sim if you want to use ultrasn0w, it seems.
