iphone 3gs 3.1 unlock

Hi , I recently bought an iphone 3gs running 3.1 software and a BB of 05.11.07 out of the box.
I want to unlock this from O2 to the 3 network, it appears theres alot of information on whether or not this is possible but alot of it is confusing !!
Can anyone tell me if it is possible and if so what steps i need to do to unlock it ?
Ive read about purplera1n etc but this just jailbreaks it as far as I can tell and I wish to unlock it !!
If its not possible does anyone know if 02 will unlock and if so how much they charge ?

Not possible to unlock this baseband now, probably ever.

I think O2 will offer unlock after the other carriers start selling iPhones in November. Contact them. The price should be the remainder of your o2 contract plus maybe an early termination fee.

Unfortunately you can't unlock it and o2 apparently still undecided how to respond to such requests once their exclusive carrier deal finishes next month!
If you have an active account with o2 and claim that you have been posted to Nepal on business where they have no reciprocal carrier arrangement, then just possibly you might get somewhere with them.
