iPhone 3G, iOS 4.1, Baseband 05.14.02

Hey all and thanks for reading/helping ahead of time.

I am trying to help my girlfriend unlock her iPhone listed in subject, but I see a lot of information that seems to be at times contradicting each other. My only goal here is to get this phone unlocked since she uses T-Mobile.

I am hoping to get someone to reply and give me an expert opinion on what they would do to unlock it or tell me that I am basically SOL on unlocking. I just don't want to do anything that will make it screwed up, so I figure it is better to ask before I start tweaking.

You aren't SOL with unlocking, but the only option available to you today has some severe drawbacks. Read this page Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle

This option which is available now is to upgrade the baseband to version 6.15, this baseband version was designed for the iPad but (mostly) works on the iPhone.
This can be done with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and ultrasn0w.

A better solution is being worked on (but the priority is unlocking the iPhone 4 on latest basebands right now)

I'm having trouble with redsn0w though, maybe you have a suggestion. I downloaded 0.9.6rc8 and my iPhone is in DFU mode, but redsn0w is not detecting it whatsoever. I know it is in DFU mode because the bottom right hardware notifications says "iPhone DFU" or something similar.

Edit: Oh I didn't update the phone, I'm guessing I need to do that. Trying now.

It seems to me now that to update the iPhone BB that I need to use an option in redsn0w:

"Enable the “Install iPad baseband” option and accept the warning."

However, redsn0w won't connect to my device and I don't see that option there either, so I'm not sure where to go from here.

Edit: I have verified several times that the iPhone is in DFU mode by unplugging the phone when it is black screened and hearing the beeping disconnect sound then plugging it back in and having it detected again as a "USB DFU Device"

Can you explain more clearly how and where redsn0w is failing to detect your device? Also what version of iTunes do you have installed?

You put me on the right track man. This computer was recently reformatted and didn't have iTunes haha.
