Long story short. Girlfriend updates her 3GS (new bootrom) to iOS 4.2.1 FW 06.15 *facepalm* - asks me to jailbreak + unlock.
Phone now stuck in True Recovery Mode.
What I have tried:
Restore with iTunes (fail) - 1015 cannot boot with any utilities out of True Recovery.
Restore with redsn0w (fail) - gets to different stages through the process and dies. Furthest it ever gets is "Loading Activation Bundles" on iPhone - freeze - back to True Recovery Mode.
Tried booting with TinyUmbrella, iReb, iRecovery + libUSB.
Tried booting tethered (longshot) with redsn0w - back to True Recovery.
Restore Custom IPSW with iTunes (fail)
No SHSH Blobs available (because she is an idiot and uninstalled TU from her machine)
At my wits end about now. Have completed all of these things on a Windows Vista (x64) machine.
Going to try pwnagetool on a friends mac tonight, and an old Windows XP box I have sitting around. Other than that uninstall and reinstall iTunes and all apps related with process and try again.
Anything else you guys can think of that I can try, or is this thing bricked until updates/workaround is released, or bricked for good?
I'm ready to throw it at a wall - 60 hours spent on this legit.
I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to 4.1 using resn0w and upgrading to iPad Baseband. Everything worked fine until I updated to 4.2.1 (I wanted to upgrade because my battery life on 4.1 would drain from 100% to 0% in hours) I used iTunes to update (this was probably the mistake I did) and it gave me an error and now I don't have a firmware on my iPhone. It's stuck on the Connect to iTunes screen. I entered DFU mode with redsn0w and it says to use a custom IPSW using iTunes... but when I do that, it looks like it's updating great and even shows the status on the phone with the Apple logo until after waiting for all that it just reboots and right BACK to that same iTunes Connect screen!
I tried to use a custom IPSW to restore on iTunes but it just gives me errors. I tried everything in redsn0w to re-jailbreak using 4.1 but it always gets stuck on "Activating..." with the pineapple logo. What do I do? I don't care to update to 4.2.1 anymore, I just want my phone back to how it was. It seems like nothing is working. Tried Tinyumbrella to kick out of Recovery, nothing. iTunes is pretty much worthless because it always gives me errors and redsn0w freezes when trying to update.
You only need to request a SHSH once from Cydia - via Tiny Umbrella to register the device with cydia's make my life easier system. If you did that, it should not have mattered that she uninstalled TinyUmbrella.
Whoever updated the baseband to 6.15 obviously did not do a good enough job of explaining to your girlfriend that this meant a world of pain if they ever tried to restore.
Custom 4.2.1 IPSW is your only option (Apple is still signing these)
SAM would have probably fixed your battery drain.
No word on if this was new or old bootrom 3GS or what SHSH you have saved.
I have moved your post into the correct thread. Read the first post. You need SHSH to restore custom IPSW >= 4.1, redsn0w won't work (except to enter PWNED dfu mode and then restore a pwnagetool custom IPSW). Sn0wbreeze won't work.
I managed to downgrade the firmware. I had 4.2.1 with 06.15.00 radio. I saved the SHSH blobs from 4.2.1 and used TinyUmbrella + iTunes to upload the 4.1 firmware. Now I got a phone with 4.1 firmware, 06.15.00 radio, 4.2.1 blobs and it is stuck in UDF mode anytime it reboots. Are the 4.2.1 blobs the problem it goes in UDF mode? It's not stuck at the Apple logo as it used to be with the 4.2.1 firmware. I can tether boot it and it works unlocked. I tried to save new blobs but TinyUmbrella gets the 4.2.1 blobs even though the firmware is 4.1. How can I make 4.1 blobs, I see custom settings for ECID in the TinyUmbrella, but there is no setting for a firmware version. Any idea how to avoid the UDF mode at start now?3GS new bootrom with 4.2.1 downgrade
I have an ITALIAN iPhone 3G with FW 4.0 but with Base Band baseband 06.15 (the iPad one): they basically jailbroke it with redsnow and they wrongly chose "Install iPad Baseband".
The result is that iTunes recognize the iPhone, but the message:
"Restore needed: iPhone cannot make or receive calls ..."
appears and the iPhone reboots.
Moreover any firmware installation with iTunes is ending with Error 1002, but I think it is normal because the BB is 06.15. In fact restoring a custom firmware (e.g., without BB) no errors come out.
In addition "General -> Info" IMEI, ICCID and Firmware Modem are blank.
Is there a method/guide to solve this issue?
I think I have to flash my baseband or revirginize the iPhone or something like this but I'd need some help to understand what it the right way!
Thanks in advance for you help!!
First off thank you so much for taking the times to read this.
I'm running out of hope for finding a solution to my problem.
This is my story and current situation.
I recieved my Iphone and accidently updated it to 4.2.1 without knowning that it needs to be unlocked so I can use it. The guide I used said that I needed to update my BB to 6.15.00 cause that was the only way to jailbreak and unlock a 3GS with IOS 4.2.1. I followed the guide on how to Unlock and Jailbreak my 3GS.
After the installation my iphone didnt want to open the Cydia app so I could finish the process, it kept on opening half way and then closing. I tried getting a solution and was recommended to reset my iphone and redo the process.
I resetted my Iphone and recieved the recovery mode problem with error 1015.
I tried to bypass with Recboot but it didnt work, my iphone kept on resetting and staying in recovery mode.
From what I understand on http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm thread, is that I can restore my 3GS to IOS 4.1
Please I need help to find the appropriate guide or steps to restore my 3GS to IOS 4.1 and get it unlocked atlast.Quote:
if u are currently on 4.2.1 then u ll have to restore back to 4.1 (because 4.2.1 will not allow u to kick the phone out of recovery when 1015 occurs due to the silly BB / iOS mismatch check added there) , then do the same steps as B-1, if u want to go again to 4.2.1 your only way is to use a custom 4.2.1 done by pwnage tool in the same steps mentioned in A
I appologies for this long post and I hope with all this detail I provided that this will be enough to finally help me to get my iphone unlocked and working as intended.
I am not experienced with iphones as this is my first one and I really feel like giving up hope cause I cant seem to find the right help to my problem, doesnt matter where I search or post.
Thank you so, SO much for the help, words can barely express my gratitude.
What you have managed to do is to restore the OS portion to 4.1 (using custom IPSW and limera1n bootrom exploit) however it is impossible to write the 4.1 NOR images due to the SHSH check implemented in hardware on the 3GS. There is NO way around this. You simply cannot do this.
Running a Frankenstein mix of 4.2.1 and 4.1 like this is a recipe for serious low level corruption of your device. Don't do it!!
Your decision in the first place to update to 6.15 baseband was a stupid and poorly researched decision.
What you can try is to click "check for update" with original 4.2.1 IPSW via iTunes, this will error (but you should be able to ignore this and re-jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.6 0.9.6 release candidate 8 afterwards and then re-install ultrasn0w)
You will boot tethered but it is the best you can expect.
Don't use the "restore" button, that won't work.
The information you need is mostly here in this thread (I have merged your post into this thread you referred to)
Two vitally important details nearly every 3GS owner posting here fails to mention:
- Old or new bootrom 3GS
- Do you have a SHSH for iOS 4.1 saved for your device?
You can use TinyUmbrella to determine what SHSH you have saved for your device.
Bootrom - The iPhone Wiki explains how to check bootrom.
Plus: do you have a mac or access to one? There are no windows based solutions for your type of problem.
