Hi, sorry for the possibly easy or repetitive question, however, I have done a lot of research trying to find these things out and I just want to know for sure I am doing the right thing.

I have a Iphone 3G with the latest 3.0 upgrade. I need to unlock my phone because I am going to Aus for 6 months and I do not want to take just an ipod with me (if you get me)!

I have never jailbroken my phone. I have read and seen about ultrasnow, but I wondered if this will all be possible and work for a phone that has never been jailbroken before with the latest Firmware.

If I am correct and it can be done, what steps must I take to make it happen. When they are released as I believe is happening soon, which tools do I need to use, and in which order?

Thank you for your time, I want to be 100% sure I am not going to mare my phone!

Yes Ultrasn0w can unlock the 3.0 - 04.26.08 BB

What you're going to need to do is run the 3.0 version of quickpwn "when its available" so that you have cydia on the springboard.

Then using the cydia app you can apply/install untrasn0w unlock

Now what exactly would "you have cydia on the springboard" mean?
And will there be any layman guides lying around with instructions of how to use quickpwn?

Yes from reading the dev blog it looks like there are a few bugs with youtube making the jail-broken device crash. even so I would think its going to be released pretty soon.

Cydia is an application thats installed during the jailbreak process that act like a gate way for installing other third party application you may want (like ultrasn0w)

You'll be able to see a "Cydia" application on your iPhone You can use it to download various patches/fixes/apps etc (and you'll be able to unlock OS 3.0 using UltraSn0w when it's posted there)

I have itunes 8.2.0.23 will quickpwn and everything work with this version when I upgrade to 3.0

apple has changed mobile device driver framework in itunes8.2 but i think if dev team is releasing quickpwn and ultrasnow, then they might have figured out the way..bcoz 3.0 doesent work below itunes8.2. so dont worry it will definitely work with itunes 8.2! wait for devteams word before upgrades!!

I am in Lebanon and had my Iphone 3G 8GB changed and unlocked to the MTC card here , Now when i went trying to upgrade it to 3.0 it erased all my memory and cant find my simm card anymore . What do I have to do to unlock my phone and be able to use it ?
