Hi I am a new member here, I just got an iphone 3gs, new bootrom, firmwire 4.1, baseband version 05.14.02, my pc is using windows 7 (32bit). I need to unlock the phone to use it as there are no official local careers here (Bangladesh).

I have seen several threads/guides/videos to jailbreak using redsnow 0.9.6b5 and unlock with ultrasnow and most of them has stated to upgrade to ios 4.2.1, but as it will be tethered and involves complicated restoring process with custom firmwire, I want to stay unlocked at 4.1 os. is it possible? or upgrading to 4.2.1 is a must for jailbreaking/unlocking with redsnow/ultrasnow (macs are also rare here so using pwnage tool will be difficult)

If i do try to jailbreak/unlock it now with redsnow/ultrasnow (remaining in ios 4.1) and something goes wrong will it be damaged permanently or i can restore it to stock ios 4.1 and try the process again? (i have read the thread regarding restoring and seen that firmwire 4.2.1 and onward wil be unable to restore to original stock firmwire, but as i will be using ios 4.1 it is possible to restore to stock 4.1 firmwire even with baseband upgrade to 06.15.00, just need to be sure ). i have got shsh of only 4.2.1 saved and tinyumbrela says others are not available as it is too late so downgrading from 4.2.1 will not be an option either.

sorry for bugging so much with all the questions, the thing is as iphones are rare here i had to pay almost 650$ to get just a 3gs (i know it was stupid on my part as i could have gotten an iphone 4 for that price if i had bought it from the US) and I want to be sure. without jailbreak and unlock its just an extremely expensive ipod for me...any help will be apriciated, thx...

I personally would not attempt this (because you don't have a 4.1 SHSH)

That is all i can tell you at this point.

Obviously, you know that you can have a tethered-jailbreak with 4.2.1 at this time. And you can also upgrade your baseband to use an Ipad baseband to get an unlock but the GPS will not work.

There are risks ....

My best suggestion is to patience wait .... The solution may be around the corner. I can't tell you much more than that.

thx for replying, I just jailbreaked it using redsnow(on ios 4.1 baseband still 05.14.02 did not upgrade to 06.15.00) working fine. But still not sure whether to go forward with the unlock.

Before jailbreaking just for testing I tried a manual restore to ios 4.1(I am still in ios 4.1 bb 05.14.02 never updated to 4.2.1 never even attempted to) using itunes but while "Verifying iPhone restore with apple" part is is going on an error code pops up "The iPhone "Sajid's iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (3194) " can anybody help me what this means and why this is happening. i want to try out a successful manual restore before trying to unlock. i dont have shsh of 4.1 saved.

Dtube's advice is solid.

Your 3194 error is because you don't have a 4.1 SHSH, if you were not able to save a 4.1 SHSH before Apple stopped signing them then you likely will NEVER be able to restore to 4.1 (or lower) again.
Wait... or sell it to someone who can actually use it.

If you are still on iOS 4.1 stay there. The best chance of you getting a reliable unlock hangs on you not updating to 4.2.1

what if I use a custom 4.1 firmware will I be able to restore to it without 4.1 SHSH? is there any downside of using a custom firmware? I found some searching the web but thought of getting approval from some experts in hackintosh before using them (moderator edit: warez link removed) this is one of them which i am thinking to use.

This is 100% impossible with new bootrom 3GS if you don't have a 4.1 SHSH

Stay on 4.1, don't mess around, a fix may eventually be released for your specific problem.

ok I will just stay on 4.1 and wait. Thx again and sorry for using the warez link, I will not post any link from that site again. And one thing, I am amazed at how quick you guys replied, I have posted in different forums but in none of them I got a reply so quickly, Fantastic....

Couldnt waited any longer so I tried unlocking my iphone staying at os 4.1 and the process went smooth as silk. I was a bit worried of any screw up but didnt face any problems at all. so now i have a phone wich is unlocked, untethered jailbroken and all and so far its working great. Thx for the replies and also to this forum, they helped a lot.
