JailBreak 3gs Idea
Hi,
From what i understand it may be possible to unlock the 3gs if were able to jailbreak. Now what i dont understand is why it would be so difficult. We have sdk for iphone, there's no reason why we couldn't create app to lauch terminal with /bin/sh and then just ftp whatever files we need to run?
I'm sure there's some apps in app store where you can start a terminal no?

You better read more info about iphone jailbreaking/unlocking, because things aren't so simple as you think.
first of all if jailbreak is available it doesn't say an unlock can be achieved easily. unlock is dependent on the hardware and jailbreak is simply software activation.

Well actually jailbreak is access to unix shell not activation, i can easily put my friends at&t sim to activate, to access the unix shell is jailbreak. From what i read ultrasn0w in theory should be able to accomplish the same for 3gs it's just you need the correct values for the 3gs hardware with it's firmware. The only issue with getting this so far is they cant jailbreak 3gs yet.
I'm surprised nobody looked into safari bugs as a way.

The bigger problem is that since 2.0 or so most apps are run sandboxed to hell and don't have access to anything fun without some sort of privilege escalation...

if you can find an appstore app the has root access it might be possible but nooo app in the appstore is allowed that kinda power
they will probably find something by dismanteling the restore ramdisk in the 3.0

Currently it should work on iOS 4.x - 6.x

If you'd like to help extend its functionality, the source is also available.

Unless we as a community felt like doing the whole "ad-hoc distribution of a jailbreak app" thing...
And that is definitely a possibility given how many people ended up getting their hands on 3.0 early.
*VERY* far from an ideal situation, and it's a wildly inane solution, but *if* we find ourselves in a situation where we absolutely have no other way of jailbreaking, than it is something that *may* be worth the trouble...

yea, but the way i see it.. as long as itunes is able to upload firmware to the iphone, theres a hole somewhere to be exploited

I completely agree... But it is a starting point, as a local user access you would be allowed to execute commands which means a system bug could be exploited to gain root and thus ability to install an unlock software.
Here is one idea that comes to mind, if i'm not mistaken the iphone app udisk is a ftp server for iphone... I believe it may allow us to upload a terminal app and then go from there...
