Yes, we were all n00bs once! But anyway, I have jumped on to the bandwagon and am now an owner of a shiny 3GS 32Gb in Black (O2). Waiting very impatiently for the jailbreak for my out of the box 3.1 (Hmpfh!) :p

Anyway, seeing as there is no ETA for a jailbreak as yet, would it be worth updating to 3.1.2 and then waiting for the jailbreak or is it likely that the jailbreak for 3.1 will come before 3.1.2?

Anyway, here's hoping to a fun 24 month contract with the 3GS! :p

İf you use official carrier then you wouldnt worry for the carirer unlock.

-feel free to update to 3.1.2 .
-Activate your iPhone with iTunes.
-Then use blackrain to jailbreak your device. (http://blackra1n.com/)

Will jailbreaking with blackra1n cause any issues with any dev-team tools in future? Also, what are Custom IPSW files?

you don't need to worry after DEV-TEAM announce the new solution.
Becasue you can restore again and re-jailebreak using DEV-TEAM's tool.
