Have tried everything - please help :(
Hi everyone,
Let me start this post by saying I have tried everywhere to find an answer or help for this.
I am in the UK. My father gave me his Iphone 3 as he had just upgraded to the 4. I knew I would need to have it unlocked but what a saga it has become.
I gave the phone to a friend to jailbreak and unlock for me. He gave it back saying it hadn't work but when I received it I noticed the following:
1. Cydia was installed
2. My carrier used to say TELUS CANADA but now says VODAPHONE UK 8.0 and now appears to be locked by Vodaphone?
3. My version is 4.1 and my baseband is 6.15.
After research I see my friend has upgraded to the 6.15 which isn't ideal but everything I read has said ultrasn0w should unlock my phone. I have successfully installed it several times but when I put my Tesco Sim in the phone (which Tesco say should work) I only get NO SERVICE and under Carrier it still shows VODAPHONE.
Anybody? Please?????? I'M DESPERATE!

06.15 should be unlockable by ultrasn0w, as you mentioned. Make sure you're running the latest version of ultrasn0w. How did you activate the device? Was it hacktivated with redsn0w or was it activated with SAM?
Does the phone work with a legitimate vodaphone sim?

1) ultrasn0w shows up as a package in Cydia, so take a peek there to see.
2) You should, it's important if you rely on an unlock and want to have push notifications, you should use SAM and not hacktivate. It can also impact your ability to join an alternate carrier's network (rarely), so it' definitely good to know.
3) Good question. I more specifically wanted to make sure that the phone would join *any* network, as it's possible that if the 3G was under an upgrade plan and he upgraded to the 4, that the IMEI on the 3G would be blocked in the EU. It's rare that this happens, but in a case where they offer an early upgrade, they can block the previous phone's IMEI. I can't stress enough that this is extremely rare, but possible.

Hi Nick, I have now tried to restore to 4.2.1 but I keep getting error 3194 no matter what I do. Tried everything including changing host file in notepad etc. Any ideas?

Restoring 4.x will require you to use TinyUmbrella and have an SHSH on file for the version of iOS you are restoring -- are you familiar with SHSH and do you have any saved for 4.x firmwares for your device?

A restore of a custom firmware crested with redsn0w then unlock with ultrasn0w should fix it. Let me know if it works, if not can do it for you online if you want, just send me a Pm
