I have an iPhone 3G 16GB from the US - bought with FW 3.0.1 (UL/JB). I wanted to use the phone in Germany with Alice/O2. I updated the FW to 3.1.3 and then to 4.2.1 (8C148) always preserving the Baseband at 04.26.08.

What I am really annoyed of - and i tried a lot over the time - is that neither EDGE not 3G works continuously. That means I can get my mails checked once with 3G or EDGE, but then I always get an error "No internet connection" although I see that the phone has an IP etc. If I want to get mails once more, it fails and I have to reboot the phone - then the first time works again and fails later. If the first thing I try after turning on 3G or EDGE is surfing a website on Safari, it may load the very basic structures (no images) and then gives a simimlar error message "Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the Internet" [if i lookup with SBSsettings I see that the phone has a Data IP Address and must therefore BE CONNECTED!].

This is my very last try i guess to make it work by getting help from some experts.

"Cannot Get Mail: The mail server .. is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail Settings" although I see that the phone has an IP etc.

I already tried APN Settings etc. Also tried iPhone Config Tool from Apple. No success. My SIM connects to 3G/EDGE on other iPhones. Other SIMs also don't connect to 3G/EDGE with mine.

I have Ultrasn0w 1.2.5 installed via Cydia on the phone.

Does it work properly with WiFi? You could have a corrupt BB.

Awhile back, I had weird problems (don't remember exactly what but definitely carrier related) with my 3GS/4.2.1/BB4.26.08. After many days of testing, custom restores, etc; I decided to update the old baseband. Surprise. The weird problems vanished.

You have many options to update your baseband and retain the unlock.

Note1: Ultrasn0w will unlock BB's up to and including 5.13.04.
Note2: BB 5.11.07 can be loaded with a stock iOS 3.1 or 3.1.2
Note3: BB 5.12.01 can be loaded with a stock iOS 3.1.3
Note4: BB 5.13.04 can be loaded with a stock iOS 4.0.1 (SHSH blobs available??)

Update: If it were my 3G, I would load a stock 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 and verify it works first.

Both versions are unlockable with Ultrasn0w and 4.2.1 is really ..s..l..o..w.. on a 3G.

WiFi always works smooth. Everything fine. Its only the EDGE/3G Data Connection that gets interrupted after the first "bits and bytes". I really don't know the reason for that.

So you think the Baseband 4.26.08 is the problem and I should update the baseband.

Which baseband is compatible with O2/Alice and FW 4.2.1 - I'd like to stay with the FW Version though it is not really fast. But the few apps left for me to use would also vanish, if I'd go back to 3.1.3

How can I "load a stock 3.1.3"? And do you mean by that, I should include the baseband update in the FW?

Loading 3.1.3 is simple. Download the firmware (iClarified.Com is a good place to find it) to a known location on your computer. Plug in the iPhone, start iTunes, then press shift while pressing the restore button in iTunes. A window will open where you can select the firmware to load. Select the 3.1.3 firmware and let it restore. When finished, the 3G will be a stock 3.1.3 and the baseband will be updated to 5.12.01.

Use redsn0w version 0.9.4 (google search) to jailbreak and install Cydia.

From Cydia, update essential, install ultrasn0w for the unlock.

When finished, use iTunes and set up phone as new.

Note: **** Be careful to press shift (or option if on a Mac), then select restore, then select the 3.1.3 firmware. If you don't do this it will be updated to stock 4.2.1 and the unlock will be gone forever !!!

I DL the necessary. But one important last question before I proceed to set up iPhone as new: Is there any possibility to preserve my apps at the current version? [a) because most of them are updated to newer versions i could not us AND b) because some of the extentions IN the apps are not available any more]
