Default Can't enable data connection after unlock

Did some searching on here and couldn't find the answer so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I have an 8GB iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11.07. The phone was jailbroken with PwnageTool 3.1.4 and then unlocked with ultrasn0w 0.93.

After running the jailbreak, I couldn't get any service (I have an AT&T phone so I assumed it would) so I ran ultrasnow and my voice service came on just fine. The problem is that the data connection doesn't and I can't figure out why not. I've seen people with Tmobile unlock the phone and use their data plan so I think there must be something I'm missing.

I have an AT&T voice plan and have a 3G data plan but I *don't* have one of the special ones you have to pay 30 bucks a month for (the 3G phone I got didn't require you to get the smartphone specific bullshit plan). I know the 3G works because when I stick the sim into an HTC Touch Pro 2, I get the 3G no problem.

Can someone give me some advice on how to work around this? Thanks!

FOLLOW UP QUESTION: Would it be better if I did the unlocking with blacksn0w?

You need to enable APN editing and put in the carrier information. This is documented in a few places on this forum. When you're using an AT&T iPhone on AT&T, but on an alternate data plan, you've got to make changes to the APN so that you can transmit data. Search around and you'll find a post explaining this -- I hate to say I don't have one handy to link you to.

You are full of so much awesome, it causes sunflowers to...I dunno...something...awesome.

Can you give me some tips on what to search for? I tried searching for APN editing and it tells me that APN is either too short or too frequent to return anything.

Either way, you've been a massive help.

So (1) Thank you so much for your response to me. I figured it out.

    (2) That was the most asininely simple solution. I just went to www.unlock.co.nz through my iPhone and it basically did it for me and now it works.

    Without problem.

It's been working for 10 minutes and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm convinced if I reboot this thing, it's going to eat shit and die and come after me in my sleep with a knife but whatever, I got internets now. Thanks again.

For everyone else who has this problem, this is the solution:

1.) Go to Cydia, search for APN Editing, and install. It will put an Cellular Data Network option into Settings>General>Network. From there you can input the APN settings manually. For me, I'm on AT&T so my settings were APN: wap.cingular, Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, Password: CINGULAR1. Restart and it worked for me.

2.) Go to unlockit.co.nz and choose your carrier. It will install a profile that changes your APN setting to your carrier.
For some reason the attempt to install the APN Editor through Cydia crashed every time so I went to number 2, which took me like 2 minutes from start to finish.

No problem -- sorry I missed the reply for a day or two and didn't get a chance to respond before you figured it out, but I'm glad you got it taken care of .
