Hi, I have a 3GS jailbroken and unlocked using BlackRa1n and its currently on OS 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11.07 I am a bit confused on this tutorial, so please help me with these questions 1. Do I need to install both redsnow and ultrasnow 1.2 to get an unlocked 4.21
2. Do I have to first uninstall BlackRa1n on my phone to restore it to any previous condition or should I just download 4.21 , use first redsnow and then ultrasnow?
3. Do I need to upgrade my baseband to 06.15 or should I let my baseband remain at 05.11.07?

Blackra1n is NOT an unlock, you are unlocked with blacksn0w.

I know it might sound pedantic but so many people confuse jailbreak and unlock and they are quite separate things implemented by separate programs.

You left out two vital pieces of information that I need to know before we can give you accurate advice.

1. Old or new bootrom 3GS? Don't rely on serial number to identify this. Do you need to run blackra1n each time the iPhone battery goes flat or you reboot your phone? The only 100% way to identify this is to check your bootrom version via DFU mode
2. What SHSH do you have saved (locally or with Cydia)?

I can give you partial answers to your questions now:

1. Avoid 4.2.1 for now (unless you have access to a mac/pwnagetool and have an old bootrom 3GS)
2. You can just remove blacksn0w and then install ultrasn0w on your phone, this doesn't require any changes to the jailbreak nor does it require you to change your iOS version. No one should be still using balcksn0w it is a ticking timebomb. Ultrasn0w works 100% with your current baseband version.
3. You should absolutely do everything you can to avoid updating your baseband. Definitely you do NOT need to update to 06.15 (unless you do something stupid like restore/update your phone to stock 4.2.1)

In summary, don't make any changes yet. You need to collect more information and clarify what tools you have available to you (OS X / pwnagetool, SHSH saved etc) before you do anything.

1. I have to connect my iphone 3gs every time my battery dies to my
Mac OSX laptop and run BlackRain to make it alive again.

2. Cydia was installed and working fine but now it refuses to start
and goes back to springboard, I am sure there were SHSH saved as it did mention on top page of Cydia that upto 4.0 was supported.

So I dont know if I have an old bootroom maybe my first answer can help u figure that, I have a Mac OSX laptop, you have mentioned that I should remove BlackRain from my iphone.

How does one do that, cause my iphone does not have the BlackRain icon
so I guess its removed already?

But my iphone is running absolutely fine otherwise, unlocked and all hacked appz are also working fine, except
cydia as of now.

1) you have a newer bootrom
2) you can upgrade your phone os to a new os ... less than 4.2.1 using pawnage tool ( since you have a mac).
3) then use redsnow to jailbreak or .. ultrasnow to unlock it

Also since Cydia is not working on my iphone how do I reinstall or fix it
as I will have to use Cydia to download Ultrasnow right?

You still haven't answered the SHSH question - you need a 4.1 SHSH to restore custom 4.1 IPSW.

You absolutely need to know what SHSH you have saved with Cydia - this is vital to staying jailbroken and unlocked.

TinyUmbrella The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella can find this out for you, just download run, plug in the iPhone and click "save my SHSH" - then look at what the log file says was successful or not.

if you end up using pwnagetool then this re-loads your entire OS and includes a fresh copy of Cydia that shouldn't have the same problems you have right now.

You have saved your iPhone3GS 4.2.1 (8C148a) SHSH locally and the request was sent to CYDIA. This means that CYDIA DOES have your SHSH. Do NOT bug semaphore about the Cydia home page showing this version. >

What do u suggest should be my next steps now?

Did you leave it running for a while? It should also eventually say things like "CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH FOR iPhone3GS 3.0 (7A341) THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO GET THEM. SORRY. YOU ARE JUST TOO LATE."

you should get a message for every iOS version from 3.0 to 4.2.1 - this will be either "CYDIA DOES have your SHSH" or "CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH"
