Default Any way to downgrade baseband?

    Hello.
I have an iphone 3g with version 4.1 (8B117). The modem firmware is 05.14.02. The phone is locked to Orange France. I don't know very much about iphones but I am aware that in order for me to use a UK sim I would have to unlock/jailbreak. However, all the information I have seen points to upgrading to 6.15 which is an ipad baseband & a permanent, unchangeable mod. I have also heard that the upgrade will possibly kill my GPS which I don't want. Would it be possible to downgrade & then jailbreak instead of upgrading to 6.15? Or is there another free way of using a UK sim? I don't like the idea of being stuck with 6.15 but I need to use a UK sim. Any ideas?

There is a remarkably slim (and I do mean remarkably slim) chance that you can downgrade your baseband. I really don't imagine it applies to you, but google search a way to find out what the bootloader revision of your phone is. If it's 05.08, you can use Fuzzyband to downgrade your baseband to something that ultrasn0w can unlock. I can't stress enough though that I don't think your phone will be that old -- the 05.08 bootloader was only available for a very short time after the 3G's launch, and only a minuscule percentage of iPhone 3G users actually have this bootrom.

If you have a newer bootloader, you cannot downgrade -- your options are the Gevey SIM / Turbo SIM, or the 06.15.00 baseband (which is irreversible as you noted, and will break your GPS).
