That said, I share your enthusiasm about the 3G/3GS having 3.0 - 4.0 fully unlocked now.

Can I have more details? My iPhone went useless due to an forced update a month a go.

1) Run Cydia on your 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 4.0 iPhone 2G/3G (3GS requires custom pwnage bundle to be on 4.0 jailbroken right now, if you're a 3GS user, wait a day or two until PwnageTool comes out)
2) Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com
3) Let it update
4) Go into changes and tell it to install ultrasn0w
5) Reboot the phone
6) Reopen Cydia and check to make sure there are no updates to ultrasn0w

Tada! You're unlocked.

You need to be jailbroken first.

For 3GS OS 3.1.3 - the only jailbreaking options are:

old and new bootrom
Spirit (don't use iTunes 9.2, must be able to legitimately activate)

old bootrom only
If you have a SHSH backup for 3.1.2 - restore to that and then restore a pwnagetool custom 3.1.3 IPSW that is already jailbroken.

Then you can load ultrasn0w 0.9.3 via Cydia to unlock.

If you can't do either of these options. Wait for a direct jailbreak for iOS 4 and OS 3.1.3 on 3GS
