3GS DFU problems :(
Hello, this is my first post so i apologise if im in the wrong thread, i have an 3gs on version 3.1.2 (7D11) and am trying to jailbrake my phone using pwnage tool, the problem i am having is i am unable to enter DFU mode, when the pwnage tool says waiting for USB it never connects, so i had a friend who already jailbroke his phone to try it for me, when he pressed the power and home button the apple appeared first then vanished it then goes into recovery mode, if i try and restore my custom package, then i get an error 1600 or 1604, is there anyone who could help, i would be very grateful
i have a macbook pro running snow leopard 10.6.1
thank you
Rob

Use PwnageTool 3.1.4 to create the custom IPSW
the 3GS needs to be jailbroken in restore mode not DFU mode.
Turn phone off, disconnect from computer
Hold down home button, connect to computer
Keep holding down home button until iTunes detects the iPhone
Restore custom IPSW using iTunes.

Re: 3GS DFU problems :(
1604 is a pretty generic error. Usually related to USB (ports, cables, drivers). iTunes mobile device support improperly installed, lack of correct permissions, internet firewall, problem with user profile.
The following guide from apple covers most of the troubleshooting steps required to resolve this.

There can be many different solutions.

Hey thanks for the reply. I can restore to the apple Ipsw so wouldn't that suggest that it isn't a driver/USB error?

Yes this rules out a lot.
Try and run blackra1n first to jailbreak. If that works, put your iPhone into recovery mode and try to restore the same custom IPSW you are having troubles with now.
If this works, great. Otherwise what do you answer when pwnagetool asks "has this phone been pwned before?"

dude i think we are making progress, i installed blackra1n and installed cydia with it, so this looks like it is working, do you still want mt to try the pwnage tool to install the custom package? or is it literly that easy?
thanks so much dude!!

TIP:
You can't load custom ipsw on 3gs if you are not jailbroken.
You will received 1604 error.
Try to restore on 3.1.2 then use blackra1n.

This is not true any more, with pwnagetool 3.1.4 the devteam added a stripped down version of the same jailbreak that is in blackra1n for 3GS models only.
This only fully supports 3GS phones manufactured before week 40 that can support an untethered jailbreak.
