    Default Hp dv8t

    Hi again,

My first HP DV8T i7 had a hardware problem with the wireless card and had to go back to the manufacturer. Onto the next one! I have snow leopard 10.6.3 installed (retail DVD install, with the combo 10.6.3 v1.1 install, and the cudadriver pkg). Haven't installed the beta 10.6.4 yet. My biggest problem is that the system is only showing 1GB of RAM installed - both in the about mac, and in the system monitor. There are 4 GB of ram in the system, but OSX is only reporting 1GB.

Also, the system profiler is showing the wrong CPU L2 and L3 cache sizes (128kb, and 1MB respectively) and only a 400mhz bus speed. Have you run any benchmark tests on your system? Is this actually crippling the system or is it just being reported incorrectly?

From the screen shots that you have posted, I see that you have the same problem on your system as well. What can be done about this?

    Thanks!

To fix that just follow the steps below:

If your system shows less memory than you have in "About this Mac" (see image below) that's very easy to fix. Empire EFI is setup with the minimum memory capacity required and all you have to do is edit the "com.apple.boot.plist" inside the preboot.dmg.

Let me show you how to do it. (This is for those who are booting up "Empire EFI Legacy" directly from the Hard drive) I have more info on my blog.

The configuration issues can be fix by editing the bootloader settings.

I hope this can help you!

Awesome instructions. Thank you! I wish I would have brought my laptop into work so I could get some REAL work done....

Where can you change the clock multiplier to get the bus speed correct? Also, is there anything that can be done about the cache sizes for the CPU as well?

Can't wait to try these out and get this thing up and running.

    Hi brock,

I'm trying hopelessly to install SL on dv8t. Mine has the exact specs as yours does. Can you list the steps you used to install SL on dv8t? I'm struck at the boot screen. I tried everything: Legacy Empire EFI v108, regular Empire EFI v108, iBoot Supported 2.0, iBoot Nvidia, tonyosx86p55 iso. I'm having issues with graphics (very slow and unresponsive UI in the SL install screen (selecting language...). Couldn't proceed any further.

Also, only with iBoot Supported 2.0, I was able to get upto the "Select language" screen. I also have to do this: cpus=1 busratio=12 fsb=133 to get the "Select Language" screen.

    Please help.

For those using the NVidia GeForce GT 320m

The DV7t shows the "NVidia GeForce GT 320m Graphic Card" working with 1 GB (1024 MB) running on Snow Leopard OS.

The entry will be 0x40 for 1 GB Graphic cards, 0x20 for 512MB Cards, 0x10 for 256MB cards.

Most bootloaders work according to your Motherboard spec..find out which one you have and that way is easy to find a bootloader compatible with your system. usually the it comes in the computer's specifications or in the HP owner's manual section....

Wow, thank you, Extraspeed, for the information on NV 320m.
That is some work you got there.

    Thanks for sharing.

If you follow extraspeeds instructions you will end up with a system that works. I have everything working with empire EFI, using a snow leopard install DVD, 10.6.3 combo updater, 10.6.4 beta, cuda driver, and the ati kext. The 1080p video works, as does audio with the volume controls etc. What I have been unable to get worked out is the CPU performance. The system is fast enough for very basic tasks, but when you benchmark the system it is quite pathetic for a 1.73 i7 quad 820qm processor. Geekbench comes in at 1758, where my core 2 2.4 macbook pro comes in at 3238, my other hackintosh core 2 quad 2.4 comes in at 5054. This 820qm should eat all of these for lunch. I even confirmed this by testing this system on some ableton live demo songs and performance songs - this thing is a dog.

I'm not sure how to correct the cpu issues. It shows up in the system profiler as the right CPU, but the L2 and L3 cache are incorrectly reported (although they show up in geekbench properly).

I was hoping to use this machine as my all in one studio powerhouse, but i'm not sure what the fixes are for this...
