For SL 10.6.4, if yours is ALC888 then you can download kext for it at kexts.com. If the kext doesn't work then I will get you a link for other kexts.

Your video card kext is NVEnabler x64 second version?

    Thanks, ratvn.
I tried alc888 and alc889 from kexts.com but they didn't work. Also, as soon as I copy & paste the kext into my /System/Library/Extensions/ folder I get a system error message saying some stuff about the kext needing to be reinstalled. Is that normal when replacing the AppleHDA.kext? I have to click OK 6 or 7 times for the messages to go away.

I have tried Kext Utility to clear the cache and rebooting, but still not working.
    Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help with NVEnabler x64, I will try giving it a go and see if it fixes dual screen back to the way it was.

What did Apple change in the System Update code to make sound in 10.6.3 work fine, but sound in 10.6.4 to stop working? Will this be an issue for future updates or is that hard to predict?

Don't copy and paste those kexts.
Save it on your desktop (or so).
Open Kext Utility and drag/drop the kext onto it.
    Then reboot when it's done.
Try it to see, if not I get you some other kexts as my EP43-UD3L audio works fine in 10.6.4 x64 and that is ALC888.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
When I use Kext Helper b7 it asks for my password. I think I need to be logged in as root? How do you get around this? (Sorry for the noob question! Root user has always confused me on Mac...)

You don't need to get around this at all.
Every time you install or delete anything in system, OSX will ask for your password.
At the very first time booting into OSX, you went through the account setup, user name/password etc. and that is your password to the system as root user (Admin in Windows). Did you forget that? Or you have not done it? Strange.

Kext installation won't work without it. So the kext you've installed may not work then.

I didn't set a password when I went through the account setup for the first time and I left it as blank. Could this be why? Root user requires a password?

Also, Kext Utility does not let me drag & drop kext files onto it. It only seems to clear the kext cache and rebuild it. I am using v2.3.2. Are you referring to Kext Helper b7?

Edit: nevermind, I think I need to drag and drop the kext onto the application, rather than opening up the application itself.

OK so I have tried KextUtility v2.3.2, a kext file which claims to fix sound for the EP45-UD3L board (ALC888) in SL 10.6.4 and an installer called ALC-UniFix.pkg which claims to fix ALC888 sound in SL 10.6.4.

    None of these methods work...

I hear a 1 second crackle in my speakers as soon as the kext file is installed, or as soon as I boot up. There is no Input/Output in "Preferences - Sound", but in "About This Mac - More Info" it shows:

    Intel High Definition Audio:
    Audio ID: 885
    Line Output:
    Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack
    External Microphone / iPhone Headset:
    Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack
    External Microphone / iPhone Headset:
    Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack
    Headphone:
    Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack
    S/PDIF Optical Digital Audio Output:
    Connection: Combination Output
    S/DIF Optical Digital Audio Input:
    Connection: Combination Input

Does this mean my ALC version is actually 885? I have always assumed it was ALC888. Do I need to update my BIOS to get it to be ALC888? It's a brand new board from TigerDirect, but maybe it's an older manufacturer date of the same model? Not sure.. it says Rev 1.1 on the box.

    Thanks

    So you got the utility.
Have you tried the ALC888/889 10.6.3 kexts instead?

Also, you were asking about Overclocking with the board, which I did reply in this thread, many posts before this one, and did you look at it?
