    Default OSX trials and tribulations

The HuaWei 3G modem work great .. I can now connect ( read/downloading emails, surf a little etc ) while on the subway and in a cab .. speed is not blazingly fast but decent ( there's some slowless when it switched towers when you are on the move but that is expected ). I downloaded Google Earth ( a 27 Mb download ) in about 5 minutes in a stationary position so not too bad ( about 115 KB/s ) with a good 3G signal.

Well .. decided to take the plunge and removed the dual booting and run OSX exclusively on the ACER. Everything works except

    • Sleep issue when on batteries - workaround is not to let the system sleep ( only sleep the display ). Since I still getting abt 4 hours from a full charge, can do without this
    • VPN software to connect to the corporate office. Need this to gain access to office shares and run SAP. eMails no issue using the OSX email client without the VPN

in my attempt to try to look at the sleep issue. Installed OSX on a TOSHIBA 16 Gb transmemory USB stick using the iPC Univeral disk ( with PPF5 ) nothing chosen except SMBIOSEFI and some other applications ( can't remember what else cause I am getting old ). The aim to be as original OSX as possible. It boots with cpus=1 .. pretty neat OSX in a USB stick . One issue is that it didn't detect the keyboard and trackpad at first boot. Have to connect a USB kb and mouse to proceed. Fixed it by installing the PS2Keyboard fix and all was fine

    More details as they come...

Haha well sticmac audio fix worked perfectly for my AOD150. Oh wellz.

Did you manage to get Garage Band from iLife working properly? Mine won't let me add tracks for some reason... Like I press add track, then Real Instrument Track, and it does nothing at all. Maybe I should update it. I downloaded Garage Band from a 2006 torrent.

But yeah got my 2gb in yesterday. I'm soo super happy with this netbook, it's amazing. My last upgrade will probably be to the 9 cell battery for super extended periods of battery time.

no issues with Garageband 09 here ... Now I am itching to get those new-fangled SSD's looking at either the 60 or 80 Gb .. and have also managed to install OSX on the HP NC6320 but it won't boot without the cpus=1 flag but even with one core .. it's actually pretty snappy except some apps won't work because it runs on dual-core setup

iLife 09 ... found one issue though the MS Office 2008 autoUpdate don't work ( trying to update to SP1 ). Found that it is due to the VooDoo kernel. It runs fine when using the vanilla kernel though.

Did some research on the SSD and looking at these 3

    1. OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail $219.00

      • Max Shock Resistance: 1500G
      • Features: RAID Support
      • MTBF: 1,500,000 hours

    2. Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH080G1 80GB SATA MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail $324.99
      • Sequential Access - Read: Up to 250MB/s

      • MTBF: 1,200,000 hours

    3. OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail $415.00
      • Sequential Access - Read: Up to 250 MB/s
      • Sequential Access - Write: Up to 180MB/s Sustained Write: Up to 100MB/s
      • Max Shock Resistance: 1500G
      • Features: RAID Support

Heard good things about Intel but they are a little pricey ( at US$4.06/Gb ) .. OCZ looks good though needs regular firmware updates ... decisions .. decisions ..

    Cool

Did my due diligence and looks like some good stuff said about the OCZ vertex

PC Perspective - OCZ Vertex Series 120GB SSD Performance Preview - Indilinx makes an intro

At USD 385 for 120 Gb that works out to be like USD 3.02 per gig ( better that the intel offering USD 4.06/Gb but still almost the same price as I paid for the puppy ). Problem is they may not accept SG credit cards see if those global shopper thingy works ( e.g. redirecting ), placed my order and will see if it's accepted ... spending way too much money man. . somebody stop me

Sweet .. they have accepted my order it seems

4/5/2009 Your credit card has been charged Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

so we'll see if all the hype abt SSD is true ( i.e. next best thing since sliced bread ) or USD 400 down the drain ...

can't wait to get my hands on the thing should be about 2 weeks to reach here in SG

    Hi!! Please help me!!
I'm trying to install Leopard xxx 10.5.6 from an external slim samsung burner, but it ALWAYS says "E" on the upper left corner and nothing else! I tried resetting the bios, hitting f12 many times and choosing the usb burner, but nothing!

    What have I to do?
Is this a bad burner? (the dvd perfectly works with my other dvd burner at home)

    Thanks!

    Update :

Well, it seemed newegg shipped the stuff

Order status - Shipped from Merchant

I got a tracking number and it's now in Columbus Ohio ( from Edison New Jersey where Newegg is ) and from there it will be shipped to me...

hehehe .. but the price seemed to be fluctuating .. I paid USD 385 and yesterday it was like USD 423 and today it is USD 399 ... weirdness... must be due to the subprime mortgage thingy at least it's not less than what I paid for

Anyways, ACER posted a new BIOS for the AOD150 ... V1.07 dated 29th April 2009 and there are no docs to tell what's fixed ... now how the hell do i update the BIOS cause it runs on windows
