Default "Workaround" for Rebelsim and incoming calls/sms on 3G-only networks

    Hi all,

just wanted to share a "workaround" for no incoming calls and sms on UMTS-only networks (3 SWE and 3 UK among others).

As pointed out by some users it's possible to authorize and place outgoing calls, answell as send SMS and use 3G-data with the Rebelsim-card on UMTS-only networks. However, incoming calls doesn't work unless you've first established the 3G-datachannel by using safari or mail.

So if incoming calls works when 3G-datachannel is active, how can we keep it open? Since iPhone has no option for "always on" for the datachannel, a possible "workaround" is to send ICMP packets to any host on Internet that responds with replys.

Using a jailbreaked iPhone I'm sending one ICMP echo request every 5 seconds in the background, which seems sufficient to keep datachannel open (when running 10 sec it the datachannel is closed and reopened with my operator). Incoming calls and sms works like a charm, even when the phone is in "sleep mode". Just remember to switch off wifi since we need keepalive over 3G.

    My info
    Rebelsim: v61i
    iPhone 3G: 2.2.1 / 02.30.03 (Jailbroken)
    Operator: 3 Sweden (UMTS only)

As you realize the iPhone will use more battery power than normal and much more bandwidth (if used over a long time).

Turned out that "sleep mode" incoming calls did only work when phone is beeing charged.

Could I ask what app or tool you are using to send icmp echo requests?
Because i tried running an in the background i.e sykpe but failed as soon as the phone went to sleep.

I'm just running a small script that runs a loop which invokes "ping -c 1 <host>" and "sleep 5".

As I said, this only work for sleep-mode when iphone is charged. As soon as you unplug power it internally turns off datachannel after 15 seconds (even if there is a ping running). So if this powersave mode could be bypassed, it might work.

Oh ok. Last nite i started by running xgps in the background cause this also uses 3g for assisted gps. Anyway its been kinda working ok... Only works if xgps does not find satalites. This way you have a constant open 3g signal. Like i said its kinda working...

Im not a programmer but i know how to ping a website i.e google in windows command prompt, which is easy enough. Is there a way to continuosly ping google or any other site in an app like mobile terminal and run it in the back ground with out using the sleep command? This would definatly work as it would keep an open 3g signal.

Download the developer kit and make your own iPhone app and utilize its Unix underpinnings.
