[Ultrasim] - Thoughts on purchase
I don't frequent the forums much so forgive me if this should be posted elsewhere, i just thought that testimony from a *sim purchaser would be valuable for those on the fence.
After getting tired of sitting around with essentially an ipod touch, I went around and researched the various *sim devices and settled on the ultrasim purchased from unlockcellular.com, mostly due to the price and the fact that site looked somewhat more legitimate than a lot of the others.
I paid 65.99 (69.99 + 6 shipping - 10$ coupon discount). The usps shipping was incredibly fast, i purchased the sim from the site on thursday and received it the following monday.
The packaging left a lot to be desired, the sim was placed in a tiny plastic bag, which in turn was placed in a padded envelope, and it in a usps postal envelope. There was no documentation of /any/ sort, which seemed like a gigantic oversight to me, not even a slip of paper with a URL or anything.
I knew enough to cut a small notch in the corner of the sim to make room for the microcontroller. The site says it includes a piece of doublesided tape, which it does, but it is so fragile that it was impossible to separate both sides in order to use it, so i didn't.
It required some work in order to place it into the iPhone tray along with my t-mobile sim. I needed to initially insert the ultrasim in order to get it into the slot, and then place the tray in and align the two when they were partially inserted. I can't complain that much, though, it is obvious that there is no graceful way of doing this. If any other *sim solution does it particularly well, i'd be impressed, there is precious little room in that tray and slot for anything beyond the simcard.
And finally, yes, it worked right away. Edge was working (jesus i forgot how slow it was) after the proper settings were in place (APN: internet2.voicestream.com, no u/p). I was able to place calls, check voicemail, send text messages right away. I was able to import sim contacts via the iSim app, and all else i've tried.
Pros : it works, it is cheaper than a lot of other solutions i've seen, the site has support forums, variety of payment and shipping options (with the cheapest being very fast, for me).
Cons : Poor presentation/packaging, no packaged documentation, very flimsy design (again, it would take effort to be more sturdy, and would likely cost more, but i am not confident the ultrasim would survive many insertions). It is not programmable or updateable, but that is not a particular issue for me.
Verdict : It works & the site seems reliable. I'd say it's a purchase, unless you have a definite source for a more sturdy solution.
I have no review of the battery life just yet; I've heard it's a concern so if I get the chance I will post it in this thread after a week or so.
Same experience here
Bought the same ultrasim from unlockcellular. Pretty much the same experience, poor packaging, no instructions, sim looks very fragile but not an issue as I don't think I will mess with it again. Delivery is very fast (mine was internationally delivered to Brazil in like 4 days).
First try did not work, had to cut a bigger piece of my sim to allow it to fit as it should against the metallic contacts. Second try worked flawless.
Everything is working since then (1 week now).
Thanks for the feedback. we already have one started long time ago
packing= if poor packaging because we use normal padded enveloper to protect then I dont know what else to say. This is as safe as we can make it after we tested them before shipping. we try to be discrete also especially for intl customer who has potential custom problem
Instruction = we stated very clear to all customer to join our forum, download files from our server, or just read what available here. much better
design = this is the only way to make it fit into iphone sim tray. if we make it thicker, it wont fix. The material is the same as normal flex/ribbon cable you find inside your phone. this are NOT design to be moved in/out.
finally, thanks for your business and review. we hope other customers will learn something from it
