Default [*sim] T-Mobile UK dropping Signal, No Service , No SIM messages

I hope one of the Moderators can make this a sticky until we get to the bottom of the problem.

It seems there is a problem in the UK with the T-Mobile Network & iPhone through the SIM Proxy Devices. (aka TurboSIM, China3gpp etc).

I was skeptical when I first heard about this problem, but I have seen it for myself!

Because the problem initially looks like it could be a contact problem, I imagine a lot of people have not reported it yet or are persevering with it!!

The symptoms are that when trying to use the iPhone with T-Mobile in the UK through a TurboSIM or similar clone device, the signal drops out and the phone suffers from "No Service" and "No SIM" messages.

I have personally seen this with 2 different customers iPhones and did some testing myself with 2 Brand new iPhones.

In my tests, the T-Mobile service comes up fine with 3 signal bars to begin with, but if left for a while, you can see the phone going down to 1 bar or "No Service" and then it pops back up to 3 bars. It can do this a few times before dropping out to "No SIM". Sometimes it will happily sit there with 3 bars until you try to do something like make a test voicemail call or send an sms etc. Whilst the call will go through fine, once you've hung up, the sequence of bad to no signal and no sim will commence!

I started to research it and a simple google search found a few other threads here on other forums backing up the problem:

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22920

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=411991

    http://www.bladox.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4299#4299

In all cases, I was able to pop another SIM (like Orange or Vodafone for example) into the same phone with the same TurboSIM and not see the problem! (now thats strange).

Bladox is sending me one of their other devices which will allow me to monitor the traffic going between the iPhone, TurboSIM and T-Mobile SIM to see if we can identify what is causing the problem.

VERY STRANGE... STRANGE.. but not important enough to be stickied.

I have a few different sims I use to test the effectiveness of the next2 (3gpp) and ALL of them seem to work in UK no problem... 02, virgin, t-mobile, orange and vodaf.

But I can postulate on the problem right now... I can nearly guarantee you are using a UK 1.1.2 OOB, I have heard of many issues with the UK 1.1.2 OOB using a sim solution and working in UK perfectly... usually bugs and glitches... however my US 1.1.2 OOB works fine... Dont understand why...

I disagree about your opinion that this is not an important issue.

This problem means people trying to use a newer style iPhone with T-Mobile in the UK is un-stable and un-usable!

I have been supplying iPhone services, turbosim's etc since July '07 and even though I don't have the problem myself, thats not a good enough reason to dismiss it and not bother investigating it to help others.

I'm sure that this is a very important issue. It used to be a problem for some users (e.g. T-Mobile Germany) before. But since a few days, it gets more and more frequent for various network providers.

I'm hunting down this problem for quite a while already. I'm a German T-Mobile customer and have had exactly the same problem, like many other German T-Mobile customers as well.

I know pretty well what is going on, but still, I've got no real safe way to fix the problem.

First, this is what happens: The TSIM works fine and does its job - faking the phone into believing that the propper SIM card is inserted - perfectly well. But after a while, there's a SMS-PP download command received from the network. This command tries to transfer data (I guess it is EDGE configuration data, but I'm still not absolutely sure about this) from the network to the SIM card. The transfer seems to work well, but the last response expected by the SIM card is missing. This makes the phone restart the SIM card since it doesn't behave as it is specified. This cycle is repeated four times. After that, the iPhone rejects the SIM card for not being spec conform.

The solution which helped most often is to do a complete downgrade / jailbreak / activation / upgrade cycle again, but with your own SIM / TSIM combo in the iPhone. Unfortunately, this kills all data on the iPhone.

I am pretty sure about the EDGE configuration hypothesis. So turning off EDGE may help. Also, it is possible, that the com.apple.carrier.plist and com.apple.operator.plist links in /var/root/Library/Preferences are pointing to the wrong provider. Removing these links and relinking to /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/UnknownCarrier.plist may help as well. But those solutions are not reported to work well (while I'm still sure that they should do the trick).

This is not a TSIM problem, so returning TSIM to Bloadox will not help much.

    Cya,

    freefall.

I'm using an OTB 1.1.2 US version with Vodafone in Portugal and I have a similar problem. I'm using a China3GPP SIM. I have "NO SERVICE" somtimes (very often) but stranger is still the carrier name (vodafone) and no bars. I can receive SMS, but can't make or receive any calls! Someone can help me?

This is a very important issue that needs to be sticky'ed!!

I have this problem on my US iphone on Tmobile US! I have been so frustrated and there is no clear cut solution.

    I have tried the following:

    ---Deleting all messages
---Deeting the sms.db and letting it recreate a new one.

these solutions worked for SOME people but not me, and probably not the guys above. This was on a chinese "turbosim" from digibox21.com, but I bought it from eBay.

Gonna try a chinese "nextsim" and see if its any different. Already out $60 bucks! should have just bought a official stealth sim or bladdox from the start.

I am in NYC and I have T-Mobile USA. I have 1.12 OOB and have the black StealthSim. It does the samething you guys are describing. I found at first, shutting down and restarting the phone helped. I am finding now I have to pop the sim tray out, move the cards around a bit and reinsert the tray.

I also get the full bar down to no service and back to full bar cycle. THis happens while I am sitting in my living room just watching the phone. I also get that when I am in a high rise office building so it may be the #@@!&# service from T-Mobile.

Im experiencing the same problem here in Finland with my operator Elisa. Im using the same CHINA3GPP sim chip and I paid about 60 bucks to get it. I tried first to move around the chip and the sim, but that did not help. Next I will try the re-downgrade+jailbreak method.

I hope this does not mean that CHINA3GPP chip just breaks after using the iphone for few months.
    OTB1.1.2 US week 48 (upgraded to 1.1.3)
    Bootloader 4.6
    Baseband 04.02_13G

    Activation&Jailbreak&Unlock method: iphone.unlock.no

    Carrier: Elisa (I'm in Finland)
All works except Visual Voicemail and GoogleMaps LocateMe

iPhone dipped to a dirty and muddy lake for 4 minutes, resurrected and came back next day with non-working Home-button.

I add that I have been using the iPhone for few weeks with no problem. The sim problem just started this day while the phone was in my pocket.

Problem: I open the iPhone and it starts to seek the carrier. It finds the right carrier (Elisa in my case) but can't maintain the connection. Tries again, finds but yet again disconnects. It does this few times and then gives up. Then it gives me No SIM or No Service.

I tried to use a different sim but I got the same problem with that. I turned the EDGE off from Services app but that did not fix the problem.
