It will be nice if we have a list the sim card reader/writers that worked for this method.
There's a few on ebay for like 20 buck.

That one will not work. You need one that can write to both the PIC and the EEPROM in the silvercard. Most programmers that can write to these will mention PIC/EEPROM programming and/or the ability to program a silvercard. Unfortunately these programmers are not cheap. The Infinity USB Unlimited and Infinity USB Phoenix should work as well as any of the supported smartcard programmers for ICprog: http://www.ic-prog.com/index1.htm
