[Question] Carrier name is "0" ?
Hello.
I have a 2.2.1 iPhone 3g with bb 2.11 . Im not using yellowsn0w - using Universal SIM.
I bought a new SIM card yesterday from another carrier. But the carrier's name doesn't show up. Instead of the name, a 0 is there.
Screenshot:

I tried the SIM on other phones and everything's fine so the SIM is not the problem. I tried downloading custom carrier logos but no luck. I even tried the custom carrier thread service (is it volkost?) but with no luck. I dont know if I did it the right way.
Say I dont want to change the carrier's name to a custom one, but why doesn't the original name show up?
Thanks

if you are using bb 2.11, get yourself pwnagetool, make a custom 2.2.1 with the 2.28 bb and use yellowsn0w to unlock, gets you rid of thaT piggyback sim

Thanks,
but everything's working fine right now. I just dont want to risk anything (from what I read some people are having problems)
Well, I found a solution (not a real one) I downloaded Make it Mine from Cydia and just wrote VIVA as the carrier (Kuwait)
But I still dont know why the freaking 0 showed up in the first place?

The problem is not only with my iPhone. All iPhones do not recognize the name of the new carrier in Kuwait "VIVA". I've asked a few people on other forums, and they've confirmed this.
Cheers

Just one note: Erica's Make it Mine is a cool tool. But wtch out once you are travelling. You wont see any carrier change = roaming situation!

You mean if I dont see the carrier name change, (which it wont 'cuz Ive already changed it to a custom one) it will automatically switch to Roaming.
First of all, I never use my sim outside Kuwait. I always buy a new SIM from the country Im traveling to.
Secondly, if I ever use it outside Kuwait, I'll be sure to switch Roaming off, or my money's going to evaporate real quickly
Thanks for the heads up volkpost, and Im sorry I spelt you're nickname wrong in my original post.
And I do appreciate all the help you're providing us here.
Cheers

Hey, no problem. What I was trying to point out is the following.
First of all: Remember that swtiching off Data Roaming in Settings will only affect dataservices. So you'll be still able to call and see roaming costs.
It wont affect you, cause you said you'd always buy prepaid simcards while travelling, thats good.
let me give you an example - its a theory of cause. While travelling your country, you are in the south near the saudi border. Cause you carrier Viva does not have a strong signal there, your iPhone might pick one from a saudi provider. You wont notice that cause the iPhone will still display Viva - it is kind of "hardcoded". You make some calls - all roaming.
It is the same problem we saw when users changed the unknown carrier bundle on the iPhone. The best is always to use a custom carrier bundle. The problem is, I dont know how those *sim solutions word in case of the carrier bundles...
