Lamesaft is in a gray area - technically it justs simulates a Test IMSI

Sorry for straying a bit off topic. So, a factory sealed and blank TurboSIM 'should' be completely legit. for sale on eBay.

When eBay removed my listing first they said:-

Well, I am being careful - and on our website I do not provide either lamesaft or Zero-G. I have obtained these apps from pz and will test them out with a 3G iPhone and Australian OPTUS, VodaFone, and TELSTRA.

I realise that changing a phone's IMEI is illegal as it's commonly done to stolen phones.

Why would tampering with the IMSI your SIM is sending be illegal in the same way though? Just curious.

The end these means are trying to achieve (to unlock a phone bought from another country) is not illegal in the UK as far as I know.

I could believe that the IMEI would get barred if IMSI tampering is detected, but I seriously doubt that the providers would be bothered enough to call the cops even if it does get noticed.

Playing devil's advocate here, the IMEI of my US-sourced iPhone 3G getting barred would not be the end of the world as you could easily sell it on eBay to another country where it won't be barred, or it'll be possible to modify it once an unlock is possible. Not that I would condone these practices.

I've been testing these proxy sims for the last few weeks. Most* of them work in the same way. The proxy sends 'spoofed'/fake/etc data to the phone in hope of tricking it to think it's on the correct providers SIM/network.

After X amount of fake data, the proxy sim then reverts back to the host sim, and then starts sending that data to try and get onto the networks.

The iPhone appears to do this randomly[1] and if you had a legit SIM this would not be a problem. However, as the timing between the proxy SIM and the iPhone could be completely different, it is ultimately possibly the network can see this and block such attempts[2]. This would be considered misuse, at least in the UK under the Telecommunications Act.

But you are not unlocking it. You are trying to make the SIM appear to be something different to the phone which may overspill to network traffic. This would also be classed as tampering with network provided SIM card - which always remain the property of your network provider.

Unlocking a phone isn't against the law in the UK.

That you don't know. If the networks feel it is damaging/abuse/tampering - why not get it investigated - after all it is their right - it's THEIR network.

What about the poor bugger that buys said phone and then comes over to the UK for a holiday. Unlucky, phone wont work at all. That is rather dishonest and if you are that determined to get a phone working - spend £380, get a phone from Australia thats properly and officially unlocked. That's what I am doing now.

[1] Intermittent service. It will work, then stop, then will work again etc.
[2] I have used 4 sims testing these solutions. Now, they only work in legit phones without proxy sims. If I use them with a proxy, I get nothing. If I unbox a brand new PAYG sim on the same network - it works (which I am testing now - and expecting it to stop working completely - soon). This would indiciate the network IS watching and making a note of the ICCIDs or similar.

Hi mattmartin are you able to confirm or invalidate the reports that, for example, the phone may "re-lock" after 6 months and then you have to go back to Telstra/etc. for a re-unlock?

You are paying for an unlocked phone. So very much doubt it. Plus, the unlock is NOT done in store. It is done at home via iTunes.

I have ordered a YESSIM/TURBOSIM from Honk Kong.

Now, here are the outcomes....


Orange
- Full reception
- Outgoing Calls - OK
- Incoming Calls - NOT WORKING
- Incoming Text - OK
- Outgoing Text - OK

Tmobile
- No reception
Only got reception for a little while then lost it. It did work initially made a call and received on as well.


So, does this mean Tmobile has cracked down on the bogus info that the SIM transmits.


Comments and suggestions please.

-Outgoing calls work, but loses signal after 5-10 mins
-Incoming calls don't work
-3G / EDGE data does not work

iPhone software version is 2.0, not 2.0.1 yet.

The YESSIM was shipped from HK on July 29 - Since they sent me an RJ45 card reader instead of a USB one I've not been able to update it.
But it doesn't seem likely it's going to work 100%.

The YESSIM site at unlock-iphone3g.com claims "Use internet: 3G, WiFi or EDGE" - this is sounding like a complete lie at the moment...
